The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced they have uncovered thousands of hours of disturbing footage showing Hamas personnel torturing Palestinian detainees within Gaza.

Jerusalem, Israel-June-12-2023: A group of Israel Defense Forces soldiers at via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem.

According to the IDF, the videos depict harrowing scenes of prisoners being interrogated, some with sacks over their heads and chained in contorted positions on floors and ceilings, reportedly recorded on CCTV cameras within a Hamas military base in northern Gaza.

BREAKING:

Israeli soldiers in Gaza just found thousands of hours of video footage of Hamas torturing their political opponents, people suspected of working with Israel and gays.

Israeli forces allegedly discovered these recordings during a raid on the compound in the Jabalia refugee camp earlier this year.

The graphic footage includes scenes of prisoners suffering severe beatings, especially on the soles of their feet, while guards appear relaxed or disinterested, sometimes conversing as the torture continues.

In one clip, a prisoner is seen chained to the ceiling with a red sack over his head, struggling to stand. One guard is seen choking a detainee, while another interrogator sits back, watching the events unfold.

An Israeli military source stated that the videos were retrieved from computers seized in March, and it took several months to process and examine the content.

While independent verification of the footage is unavailable, human rights organizations have long reported on Hamas’s history of brutal treatment toward certain groups in Gaza.

Past reports have documented the organization’s use of torture and abduction against individuals suspected of opposing its authority or collaborating with Israel.

Hamas has been accused of targeting groups including political opponents, gay men, and suspected collaborators, who face imprisonment, torture, or even death under its rule.

Amnesty International previously detailed similar abuses in a report following the 2014 conflict between Israel and Hamas, citing an organized campaign of violence, intimidation, and torture against individuals within Gaza.

The footage allegedly captured by the IDF appears to align with these past reports, showing abuse that dates from 2018 to 2020 based on timestamps visible in the videos.

Among those who have shared their experiences of abuse under Hamas is Abdul, a gay Palestinian man who fled Gaza to escape the group’s rule. He described instances of severe torture, including beatings and deprivation of food and sleep, stating, “They made me swear on the Koran that I won’t be gay again.”

Similarly, Hamza Howidy, a former resident of Gaza, reported being detained for protesting Hamas’s rule, recounting how he was tortured until he “broke and [said] whatever it is they wanted.”

Howidy, who eventually fled Gaza, highlighted the challenges he faced, saying, “Hamas controls everything,” and sharing that detainees often had no access to legal assistance, with families kept in the dark regarding their loved ones’ fates.

The IDF’s footage also sheds light on methods reportedly employed by Hamas interrogators, including electric shocks and melting plastic on prisoners’ skin.

Some detainees were allegedly executed or died from being dragged by vehicles, and their families were denied proper burials.

Former Israeli intelligence officer Guy C. told The Mail on Sunday that Yahya Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader recently killed by Israeli forces, was known for his fixation on rooting out suspected collaborators, holding “thousands against their will.”

Human rights expert Ahmed Fouad Alkharib, now based in the United States, described torture as “a fundamental component of Hamas’ governance strategy” to enforce control through fear.

According to Alkharib, the group’s tactics aim to silence dissent within Gaza, often involving extreme physical and psychological abuse to intimidate those who might oppose Hamas’s rule.

Israel’s latest findings expose longstanding accusations against Hamas and reinforce concerns over the group’s governance tactics within Gaza, where residents face severe repression for perceived dissent or opposing lifestyles.

Despite widespread reports of such abuses, global narratives on Hamas remain divided, with some groups characterizing them as freedom fighters, while critics argue that Hamas continues to hold the people of Gaza hostage under a regime of fear and violence.
