Hillary Clinton now says mass migration has gone too far.
The former secretary of state and two-time presidential candidate acknowledged Saturday that unchecked immigration has created serious problems, a sharp reversal from her previous positions on the issue.
“There is a legitimate reason to have a debate about things like migration,” Clinton said during a panel at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. “It went too far, it’s been disruptive and destabilizing, and it needs to be fixed in a humane way with secure borders that don’t torture and kill people and how we’re going to have a strong family structure because it is at the base of civilization.” (RELATED: More Dems Than Ever Want To Abolish ICE. Clinton participated in a session titled “The West-West Divide: What Remains of Common Values,” where she described immigration as a major point of contention, ANI News reported. She also defended the deportation records of her husband and former President Barack Obama, claiming they removed more people from the country than President Donald Trump without detaining children or causing deaths among American citizens.
Her weekend comments stand in stark contrast to the positions she championed during her 2016 White House bid. Fox News reported that Clinton backed Obama’s executive orders shielding millions of undocumented parents and children from enforcement actions.
She opposed significant expansion of border barriers and pushed to eliminate family detention facilities. She also sought to reduce immigration raids, which she argued at the time created “unnecessary fear and disruption in communities.”
Clinton’s tone on enforcement has shifted dramatically over the years. In 2018, she blasted the Trump administration on social media, writing that separating families at the border was “an absolute disgrace,” according to Fox News. Just last year, she praised both legal and illegal immigrants for strengthening the American economy by expanding the workforce.
