CNN anchor Jake Tapper is facing criticism for his upcoming book, Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again, which claims that Biden’s inner circle concealed the former president’s cognitive issues.
The book, co-authored with Axios correspondent Alex Thompson, is set to be released on March 20.
However, conservatives have been quick to point out that Tapper himself was among those in the media dismissing concerns about Biden’s mental fitness during the 2020 campaign.

The backlash stems from Tapper’s own history of pushing back against such claims, particularly during an interview with Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump and former co-chair of the Republican National Committee.

In 2020, Tapper accused Lara Trump of mocking Biden’s stutter when she pointed to signs of cognitive decline.
“First and foremost, I had no idea that Joe Biden ever suffered from a stutter,” Lara Trump said at the time when confronted by Tapper.
“I think what we see on stage with Biden, Jake, is clearly a cognitive decline. That’s what I’m referring to.”
Tapper responded sharply, telling her, “You have no right… I think you were mocking his stutter, and I think you have absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody’s cognitive decline.”
Now, four years later, Tapper’s book argues that Biden’s decision to run for re-election was “shockingly narcissistic, self-delusional, and reckless.”
A press release from publisher Penguin Press claims the book will expose how Biden’s closest aides and family members “lied to themselves, allies, and the public” about his mental condition, driven by their belief that he was the only Democrat who could defeat Trump.
Conservatives online have called out Tapper’s apparent shift. Political commentator Stephen Miller highlighted the irony of Tapper’s involvement, writing on X, “Here’s Jake Tapper incensed over Joe Biden’s ‘stutter’ and outraged over claims of Biden’s cognitive decline. Now he’s cashing in on a book about Biden’s cognitive decline and media cover-up. There is no bottom for these people.”

The book details Biden’s widely criticized debate performance against President Trump on June 27, 2024, which was seen as a turning point in the campaign.
According to Tapper and Thompson, “What the world saw at Joe Biden’s one and only debate was not an anomaly—it was not a cold, it was not someone who was under or overprepared, it was not someone who was just a little tired. It was the natural result of an eighty-one-year-old man whose faculties had been diminishing for years.”
Less than a month after the debate, Biden withdrew from the race, paving the way for then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost to Trump in the general election.
Tapper, in a statement, said he was inspired to write the book after witnessing the political fallout.
“Toni Morrison once said, ‘If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it,’” he said.
“That’s what inspired this book: we wanted to know more about what we all just lived through. More than 200 interviews later, Alex and I have a much better idea. And soon you all will too.”
Ironically, Tapper had previously lost a book deal about Biden’s presidency in 2023 due to what publishers described as a declining market for political books.
However, after Biden’s withdrawal from the race and the Democratic Party’s subsequent defeat, books detailing the missteps of his re-election bid have surged in demand.
The publisher’s press release frames Biden’s re-election campaign as the defining failure of his presidency.
“The irony is biting: In the name of defeating what they called an existential threat to democracy, Biden and his inner circle ensured it, tossing aside his implicit promise to serve for only one term, denying the existence of health issues the nation had been watching for years, dooming the Democrats to defeat,” the statement reads.
“The decision to run again, the Original Sin of this president, led to a campaign of denial and gaslighting, leading directly to Donald Trump’s return to power and all that has happened as a consequence.”

Tapper’s book may offer new insights into the Biden-Harris administration’s inner workings, but critics argue that his own role in dismissing concerns about Biden’s mental fitness should not be overlooked.
