Former FBI Director James Comey released a video Sunday in response to the dismissal of his daughter, Maurene Comey, from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY).
The video, posted to his Substack page, comes days after Maurene Comey was removed from her role as a federal prosecutor without a stated reason.
According to reporting from the Associated Press, Maurene Comey was fired on Wednesday, July 17, via a memo from the Department of Justice.

The AP reported that “there was no specific reason given for her firing from the U.S. attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York,” citing a source who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the nature of the personnel matter.
Following her dismissal, Maurene Comey issued a statement to her colleagues, which was later read aloud by her father in his video message.
“Yesterday was unexpectedly my last day in the office. I was summarily fired via memo from Main Justice that did not give a reason for my termination,” she wrote.
“Every person lucky enough to work in this office constantly hears four words to describe our ethos: without fear or favor.”

Her message continued, emphasizing the importance of integrity in federal prosecution and warning that fear could undermine the work of those remaining in the office.
“If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain. Do not let that happen. Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought,” she stated.
Maurene Comey had served nearly a decade in the SDNY, where she worked on several high-profile cases.
She did not name President Donald Trump in her statement, but referenced a “new phase” where fear might challenge the independence of the office.
James Comey, who served as Director of the FBI from 2013 until his dismissal by President Trump in 2017, used the video to voice his concern over what he described as political interference in the Department of Justice.
“The reservoir is in grave danger right now. Trump and the hacks who lead the Department of Justice are hammering at the dam day after day, trying to turn it into just another gold-leaf-covered Trump subsidiary,” James Comey said.
In the five-minute video, Comey discussed what he called the “reservoir of trust and credibility” that he believes DOJ employees inherit upon entering the department.
He described this metaphor in detail, recalling his time as U.S. Attorney for SDNY while living in a community surrounded by literal reservoirs.
“The job of every Justice employee—their sworn obligation—is to protect that reservoir, to pass it to those who come after them, who may never know them,” he said.
Comey concluded by urging current DOJ employees to remain committed to their responsibilities despite potential risks.
“You may get fired for acting that way, but there’s honor in that—and nothing but disgrace for those who don’t stand up,” he said.
“There are going to be hard weeks in the Trump era, and this was one for my family. But there are plenty of good people still in the Department committed to doing things the right way, committed to the rule of law. For them—because of them—keep the faith.”
