Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday dismissed Maurene Comey, a top prosecutor in the Department of Justice’s Southern District of New York (SDNY), amid ongoing tensions in the high-profile Manhattan office and renewed focus on her family’s controversial ties.

Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, was removed from her post in a decision that immediately drew attention due to her involvement in several high-profile cases, including the prosecutions of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, as well as her father’s central role in the origins of the now-discredited Russia investigation.

The Department of Justice has not released a public explanation for her dismissal, and neither the SDNY nor the White House offered comment on whether the termination was requested or directed by officials outside the department.

Comey’s firing comes as her father, James Comey, faces increased scrutiny over his role in the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation and his alleged coordination with former CIA Director John Brennan in what some officials now suspect was a politically motivated effort to undermine then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016.

That probe is now the subject of an ongoing DOJ investigation.

In recent years, Maurene Comey has played a leading role in the DOJ’s handling of major criminal cases, most notably the prosecution of financier Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

The outcome of those cases, and the Justice Department’s conclusion that there was no prosecutable “client list” related to Epstein’s activities, have sparked criticism from members of the public, media figures, and some Trump administration allies.

President Trump has previously addressed frustrations about the Epstein-related prosecutions, stating that public attention should be focused on “the incredible and unprecedented success” of his administration rather than what he called “some long-dead pervert.”

Comey was also recently assigned to the case involving Sean “Diddy” Combs.

The high-profile trial ended with a jury acquitting Combs on the most serious charges, including multiple sexual assault allegations, which further raised questions about prosecutorial decisions made under her leadership.

Her removal marks the latest in a string of shakeups at the Southern District of New York. Earlier this year, the acting U.S. Attorney and multiple other prosecutors resigned after the Justice Department ordered them to halt a corruption investigation into New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

The SDNY office, long viewed as one of the most independent and aggressive prosecutorial offices in the country, has experienced internal upheaval in recent months.

According to one person familiar with the matter, dozens of colleagues escorted Comey from the office following her dismissal on Wednesday evening.

Maurene Comey’s exit from the Justice Department reflects ongoing changes under Attorney General Bondi’s leadership, as the Trump administration moves to reassert oversight of the department and review personnel tied to investigations and prosecutions from previous years.
