Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett is running for Senate. Her mouth is her own biggest obstacle.
In April, Crockett claimed she “had to go around the country and educate people about what immigrants do for this country … The fact is, ain’t none of y’all trying to go and farm right now.”
“Okay, so I’m lyin’?” Crockett asked a nervously laughing crowd. “You’re not. You’re not. We’re done picking cotton. We are. You can’t pay us enough to find a plantation.”
The implication being: Democrats are importing a slave class of Mexicans to pick their crops. And this is a good thing.

Maybe a little too much honesty there, Jasmine. Hispanics make up the biggest share of Texas’ population, surpassing whites in 2023, according to The Texas Tribune. I can already see a Spanish-language attack ad featuring Crockett holding a whip. (RELATED: How Republicans Tricked Jasmine Crockett Into Running For Senate)
Crockett has addressed her past comments in a series of messages posted by Texas journalist James Barragán.
“My point then—and now—is to highlight the shared struggle between Black and Brown communities,” Crockett allegedly wrote.
“So let me state the obvious part out loud: John Cornyn, Ken Paxton—and their Republicans—have a clear record of policies that harm Latino communities. But here’s what I know—I will stand and have a record of standing up to these policies … While the Republican party attempts to divide us by calling Latinos ‘rapists’ and ‘criminals’ from ‘shithole countries,’ I fight for Texan’s [sic] dignity, their safety, and their economic freedom—not just when it’s politically convenient, but every single day.”
Crockett certainly strikes a different tone in these remarks. I’m tempted to speculate that she, or more likely, someone on her team, used ChatGPT to generate the response. Maybe they added the smattering of typos for that authentic Crockett flair.

A statewide survey from Texas Southern University sees Crockett leading state Rep. James Talarico by eight points, according to The Texas Tribune. The survey, held Dec. 9 to 11, asked 1,600 likely Democratic primary voters who they intended to support in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Crockett garnered the support of 89% of black voters polled. Talarico had significantly higher support than Crockett among white and Hispanic voters, The Texas Tribune reports. If President Donald Trump’s popularity among Hispanic voters is any indication, vague invocations of “dignity” aren’t going to win that demographic.
