Vice President of the United States J.D. Vance said his administration has spent the past year reversing policies from the previous administration that he said infringed on religious freedom, conscience rights, and protections for faith-based Americans.

Speaking about what he described as early priorities, Vance said the administration focused first on dismantling policies he characterized as punitive toward people of faith.

“Some of our work over the last year has been very straightforward and very easy,” Vance said.

“We started by undoing the evils we saw under the previous administration, like, for example, throwing priests and grandmothers in prison for praying outside a clinic. That’s over. We stopped it.”

Vance said the administration also moved to end taxpayer-funded abortion policies that were implemented under the previous administration, including coverage for travel related to abortion services.

“We’re where the previous administration mandated taxpayer funding for abortions, including travel costs across the entire government, this administration ended it,” he said.

According to Vance, those actions were followed by broader efforts to build on policies enacted during President Trump’s first term, with a focus on religious liberty across multiple areas of government.

“And over the past year, we built steadily upon the victories of the President’s first term, we have secured religious freedom in the United States of America, once again, that was important,” Vance said.

He said the administration also acted to halt what he described as censorship of religious Americans in public life.

“We have ended the censorship of Christians, Jews, and other Americans of faith, who are punished simply for following their faith in public life,” Vance said.

Vance pointed to healthcare policy as another area where changes were made, particularly for medical professionals who object to certain procedures on religious or moral grounds.

“We have expanded conscience protections for health care workers and defended faith-based foster care and adoption,” he said.

Vance said those changes included rolling back regulations implemented during the Biden-Harris administration that he argued forced healthcare workers to compromise their beliefs.

“We gutted Biden-era rules and ensured that no one, no nurse, no pharmacist, and no physician has to check their faith and their values at the door of their workplace,” he said.

Vance framed the administration’s actions as a direct response to what he described as a broader pattern of government power being used against religious Americans under the previous administration.

“And under the last administration, under President Biden and congressional Democrats, the power of government we know was marshaled against us, against our faith, against our families, and, most importantly, against the most vulnerable,” Vance said.

He concluded by saying those policies were permanently halted when President Trump returned to office.

“That stopped with the Trump administration, and it is not coming back,” Vance said.
