Vice President JD Vance announced Thursday that the Trump administration will not seek approval from Democrat lawmakers before carrying out deportations of illegal immigrants with serious criminal records.

Speaking during an interview, Vance emphasized that the administration is focused on enforcing immigration laws and protecting American citizens, regardless of backlash from the left, as reported by The New York Times.

The administration recently invoked the Alien Enemies Act to deport members of the Tren de Agua gang and remove Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national alleged to be affiliated with the violent MS-13 gang.

Garcia’s deportation sparked criticism from Democrats, but the White House has defended its actions, stating the decision was based on longstanding legal precedent.

“Back in 2019, an immigration judge looked at all the evidence, looked at all the data and concluded that this allegedly innocent person that we sent to El Salvador was actually a member of an MS-13 gang. He had also committed some traffic violations, he had not shown up for some court dates. This is not exactly father of the year here, this is a person that we don’t think should be in our country,” Vance said.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine listens as Vice President JD Vance speaks at Fire Station 2 in East Palestine, Ohio on Feb. 3, 2025. Vice President Vance came to East Palestine to mark the second anniversary of the Norfolk Southern Train derailment.

“Here’s the most important point, though, Lawrence [Jones] is whatever the argument is, whatever the justification is, no one doubts that no even the crazy, left-wing media criticizes the idea that we can deport this person. They just took issue with the reasoning for why we deported this person. This was unquestionably an illegal alien, this was unquestionably a person who broke the laws to get into our country, this is unquestionably a person who an immigration judge had found had zero right to be in the United States of America. We do not ask permission from far-left Democrats before we deport illegal immigrants. We do the American people’s business.”

A Department of Homeland Security official clarified that while Garcia’s removal was linked to an immigration error, his criminal history and known gang affiliations were sufficient grounds for continued law enforcement custody.

Vance also pointed to what he described as congressional Democrats’ increasing focus on the rights of illegal immigrants rather than their victims. He cited the case of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, who was strangled to death by two Tren de Agua gang members.

“They’ve gone off the deep end,” Vance said, referring to Democratic lawmakers.

Since President Donald Trump returned to office on January 20, the administration has deported over 100,000 illegal immigrants and made more than 113,000 arrests, according to a New York Post report published Tuesday.

Despite pushback from federal judges, including U.S. District Judge James Boasberg—appointed by former President Barack Obama—the administration has continued its deportation efforts.

Boasberg issued a ruling blocking deportations under the Alien Enemies Act, an 18th-century law that allows a president to deport foreign nationals without a hearing during times of war.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed in a statement on March 17 that several deportation flights had already departed U.S. airspace before Boasberg’s ruling took effect, allowing them to proceed to El Salvador.

“You’re right, the courts, some radical left judges, have stepped in and said ‘you’re not allowed to deport MS-13 gang members.’ That’s crazy, we think the Supreme Court is gonna overrule it and we’re gonna keep on fighting for the president’s prerogative to enforce the law,” Vance said.

In response to the court ruling, Republican Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas introduced articles of impeachment against Judge Boasberg. Gill argued the judge “abused his power of the judiciary” in a move to “usurp President Trump’s clear plenary, Article II powers as commander in chief.”

Meanwhile, border enforcement continues. In March, Border Patrol reported approximately 7,180 crossings—marking the lowest number of monthly crossings on record.
