Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during a Tuesday podcast that she is thrilled with Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s return to the spotlight after his failed 2024 vice presidential campaign alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Walz launched a town hall tour in red districts across the nation in March and told The New Yorker during a March 2 interview that he would weigh launching a 2028 presidential bid if the circumstances and his “skill set” were right. Psaki said on “Pivot” that Walz seemed to be hidden away during the majority of the 2024 campaign and expressed excitement about his comeback. “As much as I’ve said repeatedly that there are not enough Democrats out there and more need to be out there, I am delighted by the reemergence of Tim Walz, who I think was like locked in a closet somewhere during the 2024 — or most of the election after he became the running mate,” Psaki said. “I love his imperfect, rough-around-the-edges answers to things.”

“He had this amazing moment a couple of days ago where he talked about the benefits of the Department of Education and what it actually does for people. He was asked a question about a Title I  — by a student at a Title I school,” she continued. “I think this is one of those bureaucratic things most people don’t know how to talk about, and I think a lot of parents would actually care if they knew. I loved that. I love the reemergence of him.”

Walz has reflected on the failed campaign during recent podcast appearances. The governor revealed on “Fast Politics with Molly Jong-Fast” in February that he regretted wasting several days of the campaign prioritizing Trump’s comments about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio.

“I will kick myself that I got sucked in. I bet you I spent three or four days, maybe longer, not clowning, but just hammering them over the eating dogs and cats because it was so ridiculous,” he said. “And I took that hook, line and sinker. We were talking about immigration at a critical part of the campaign. And it was hurtful. And it pissed me off. And I was standing there to defend people. And it didn’t do a damn bit of good electorally.”

Moreover, on “This is Gavin Newsom” in March, Walz griped about the attacks on his masculinity that he faced during the campaign.

Walz faced criticism during the 2024 campaign for the far-left initiatives he has supported, such as signing legislation in 2023 that required schools to provide tampons in both girls’ and boys’ restrooms. President Donald Trump and others subsequently dubbed the governor “Tampon Tim.”

He also repeatedly made inaccurate assertions about his past during the campaign.

Trump said during a March 21 Oval Office press conference that he believes Walz influenced Harris’ November election loss.

“The guy’s a loser. He lost an election. He played a part. You know, usually a vice president doesn’t play a part, they say. I think Tim played a part. I think he was so bad that he hurt her,” the president said. “But she hurt herself and [former President] Joe [Biden] hurt them both. They didn’t have a great group. But I would probably put him at the bottom of the group.”
