Matt Weiss, once a rising figure in college football and former assistant coach under Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, now finds himself at the center of a disturbing criminal case.

Federal prosecutors dropped the hammer this week, charging Weiss with an appalling scheme that allegedly involved hacking into the private accounts of over 3,000 people—most of them female college athletes—to steal their intimate photos and videos, as reported by TMZ.

According to an indictment filed in Michigan on Thursday, Weiss began his twisted operation back in 2015. At the time, he was working under John Harbaugh on the Baltimore Ravens staff.

He allegedly carried out the illegal activity all the way through 2023, when he was coaching for John’s brother, Jim Harbaugh, at the University of Michigan.

The feds say this wasn’t some one-time lapse in judgment—it was a long-running, deliberate campaign of digital trespass. Prosecutors say Weiss utilized databases and login information believed to have been leaked in past data breaches.

From there, he allegedly wormed his way into personal cloud accounts, targeting individuals whose content was never meant for public eyes.

In fact, the indictment accuses him of specifically seeking out private, intimate content, including photos and videos “never intended to be shared beyond intimate partners.”

To make it even more perverse, prosecutors claim Weiss kept notes on his victims, describing their bodies and even documenting their supposed sexual preferences.

Not only did he allegedly invade their privacy, he cataloged their most personal details like some kind of twisted hobbyist.

Weiss now faces 24 federal charges: 10 counts of identity theft and 14 counts of unauthorized computer access. Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck didn’t mince words.

Caitlin Thomas of Hastings won girls 3000 meter race during the New York State Section 1 track and field qualifier tournament at the Armory in New York City Feb. 23, 2025.

“Our office will move aggressively to prosecute computer hacking to protect the private accounts of our citizens,” she told The Associated Press.

Weiss’s coaching résumé, once something to brag about, now reads more like an exhibit list in a criminal trial. Before his fall from grace, he played football at Vanderbilt from 2001 to 2003.

After hanging up his cleats, he jumped into coaching, with stops at Stanford, Baltimore, and finally Michigan.

Michigan fired him in January 2023, shortly after law enforcement raided his home in Ann Arbor. At the time, Weiss put out a boilerplate statement, saying he would fully cooperate with authorities and hoped for a resolution.

Well, that resolution has arrived—and it’s spelled indictment.

While the media tiptoes around the nature of the charges, the facts speak for themselves.

This wasn’t about a simple mistake. It was about deliberate, targeted violations of privacy on a massive scale—committed by someone entrusted with mentoring young athletes. Disgrace doesn’t begin to cover it.
