Former President Joe Biden suggested Thursday that sexism played a key role in President Donald Trump’s 2024 victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, as reported by Newsmax.

Speaking during an appearance on ABC’s The View, Biden said he was not surprised by Harris’ loss and claimed that the Trump campaign had effectively used gender-based attacks to undercut her candidacy.

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during a Get Out The Vote campaign rally Friday, November 1, 2024, at Little Chute High School in Little Chute, Wisconsin.

“I wasn’t surprised, not because I didn’t think the vice president wasn’t the most qualified person to be president. She is,” Biden said.

Biden, who withdrew from the 2024 race after a widely criticized debate performance against Trump in June 2024, insisted that his decision to step aside was voluntary and maintained he could have defeated Trump again had he stayed in the race.

“A lot of people didn’t show up,” he said, commenting on the voter turnout. Biden added that Trump received “7 million fewer votes” than he did in 2020 — though in the 2024 election, Trump increased his vote total by over 3 million.

Despite his exit from the race, Biden defended Harris, attributing her loss not to her record or polling performance, but to what he called a “sexist route” taken by the Trump campaign.

“They went the route of a, the sexist route, whole route, this is a woman, she’s this, she’s that,” Biden said.

“I’ve never seen quite, uh, as successful and consistent campaign undercutting the notion that a woman couldn’t lead the country — and a woman of mixed race.”

Biden did not address Harris’s polling challenges or key moments during her tenure that drew criticism, including her handling of the border crisis and public appearances that often faced scrutiny.

Instead, he doubled down on the claim that bias played the central role in her defeat.

“They played that… fairly well,” he added, referring to the Trump campaign’s strategy. His sentence trailed off before he joked that one of the co-hosts on The View had asked him not to speak too long, referencing his well-known habit of rambling in interviews.

President Trump defeated Harris in the 2024 general election after she replaced Biden as the Democratic nominee following his withdrawal. Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, after securing wins in several key battleground states.
