Former President Joe Biden made headlines Friday evening after making a demonstrably false statement about inflation and wages during his speech at the Nebraska Democrat Party’s “Ben Nelson Gala” in Omaha, as reported by the Gateway Pundit.
Speaking before a crowd of Democrats, the 82-year-old used the event to attack President Donald Trump, framing him as a “danger to democracy” and claiming last week’s election results sent “a message to Trump and his crowd.”
Biden told attendees, “This is a democracy, and the fact of the matter is there are no kings in democracies.”
During his remarks, Biden made an assertion that quickly drew scrutiny. “When I was President, wages were up, and inflation was down!” he said.
The claim immediately sparked widespread criticism across social media and news outlets, as data from his time in office shows inflation reached its highest level in four decades.
Under Biden’s administration, inflation peaked above 9%, largely driven by increased federal spending and supply chain disruptions. Economists pointed out that the cost of basic goods skyrocketed during his presidency, eroding real wages for working Americans.

According to FOX Business:
“High inflation has created severe financial pressures for most U.S. households, which are forced to pay more for everyday necessities like food and rent. Grocery prices are up more than 21% from the start of 2021, while shelter costs are up 18.37%. Energy prices, meanwhile, are up 38.4%.”
The data directly contradicts Biden’s statement and reflects a broader frustration many Americans expressed during his tenure.
Despite repeated assurances from his administration that inflation was “transitory,” consumers experienced persistent price increases across nearly every sector of the economy.
Wage growth during that same period also failed to keep pace with rising costs, meaning most Americans saw their purchasing power decline.
This economic reality became a defining issue throughout Biden’s presidency and played a major role in shaping voter sentiment in the 2024 election cycle.
Biden’s remarks in Omaha came as he sought to rally Democrats after recent electoral setbacks.
His attacks on President Trump and claims about the economy appeared aimed at reenergizing his base, but the verifiable record from his time in office continues to cast a shadow over such assertions.
The comments mark yet another instance where Biden’s public statements have conflicted with documented facts, adding to a long list of controversies surrounding his handling of the economy during his presidency.
