With just two weeks remaining until Election Day, Joe Biden sparked controversy during an event in Concord, New Hampshire, when he called for his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, to be “politically” locked up.
Biden made the comment at a political event hosted by the New Hampshire Democratic Party after speaking at an official event about his administration’s efforts to lower healthcare and prescription drug costs.
During his speech, Biden reiterated his long-standing argument that Trump, if re-elected, would be a threat to the nation’s democracy. “Our democracy is at stake,” Biden warned, adding, “Think about what would happen if Donald Trump wins this election.”

Biden then made the remark, “I know this sounds bizarre. It sounds like if I said this five years ago, you’d lock me up. We got to lock him up.” The president quickly corrected himself by adding, “Politically lock him up. Lock him out. That’s what we have to do.”

“We gotta lock him up.”

The comment quickly drew attention, as it echoed the “lock her up” chants from Trump supporters during his 2016 campaign against Hillary Clinton.
Although Biden immediately clarified his remark, it comes as Kamala Harris has been working to stop supporters at her rallies from chanting similar slogans directed at Trump.
Trump’s campaign quickly capitalized on Biden’s comments, posting video clips on social media.

Trump’s national press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, responded with a statement accusing Biden and Harris of targeting Trump for political persecution. “Joe Biden just admitted the truth: he and Kamala’s plan all along has been to politically persecute their opponent President Trump because they can’t beat him fair and square,” Leavitt said. “The Harris-Biden Admin is the real threat to democracy. We call on Kamala Harris to condemn Joe Biden’s disgraceful remark.”
There was no immediate response from the White House, but aides pointed out that Biden had quickly corrected himself by specifying that he meant Trump should be “politically” locked up.
The back-and-forth comes amid the ongoing investigations into Trump, who has been indicted multiple times and made history as the first former president convicted in a criminal case.
Trump has consistently claimed that the investigations into him are politically motivated. He has also suggested that, if re-elected, he would pursue prosecutions of his own political rivals.
Both Biden and Harris have regularly warned that Trump poses a threat to democracy if he is re-elected. “There’s only two things we can do. Guarantee that he doesn’t [win]. Or if he does, make sure we have the strongest Democratic majority we can get,” Biden told supporters in New Hampshire.

At the same event, Biden criticized Trump for attempting to repeal the Affordable Care Act, mocking his former opponent’s plan to replace it with a vague concept. “My predecessor, the distinguished former president,” Biden said sarcastically, “wants to replace the Affordable Care Act with… what he refers to as a concept of a plan.” Biden added that Trump “has no concept of anything.”
Joe also delivered remarks at a nearby community college earlier in the day, highlighting his administration’s achievements in reducing healthcare costs. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a progressive leader and former Democratic presidential candidate, joined Biden at the event.
As the 2024 election approaches, tensions between the Biden and Trump campaigns continue to escalate, with both sides accusing the other of being a threat to the nation’s democratic institutions.
Trump’s supporters have also blamed rhetoric from some Democrats for two failed assassination attempts against the former president earlier this year.
