Former White House National Security Advisor John Bolton is calling for U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to step down following President Donald Trump’s tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday.
Bolton made the remarks during an appearance on MSNBC, where he told host Nicole Wallace that both Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz should resign from their positions.
Bolton argued that remaining in the Trump administration could damage their long-term reputations.

“This is really the time to do it,” Bolton stated.
“If they don’t get out now, I think their reputations will suffer for a long, long time, and that would be sad because their record in believing in a strong American national security policy is very good up until now.”

The calls for resignation come after a heated exchange between Trump and Zelensky at the White House.
Following the meeting, Trump made it clear that he does not believe Zelensky is currently committed to a peaceful resolution.
“President Zelensky is not ready for peace if America is involved because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE,” Trump stated after the discussion.
Tensions escalated when Zelensky suggested that the United States would eventually face consequences if it did not meet his demands for continued support.
“There are a lot of questions. Let’s start from the beginning. First of all, during the war, everybody has problems, even you, but you have a nice ocean [in between], and don’t feel it now, but you will feel it in the future. God bless you,” Zelensky told Trump.
The meeting ended with Zelensky being asked to leave the White House, and a pending deal between Washington and Kyiv regarding Ukrainian minerals was put on hold.
Following the meeting, Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, stating that Zelensky’s approach was counterproductive to achieving peace.
“That wasn’t supposed to be this way, but that’s the path he chose, and I think, frankly, sends his country backwards in regards to achieving peace, which is what President Trump wants at the end of the day,” Rubio said in an interview. He added that the Ukrainian president should apologize for “turning this thing into the fiasco.”
As reported on Tuesday, President Trump has ordered all military aid to Ukraine to be paused, signaling a shift in U.S. policy.
White House officials confirmed that the decision is part of an effort to reassess whether continued aid is helping to bring the conflict to an end.
“As President Trump focuses on ending the war in Ukraine, the ‘pause’ in aid is meant to ensure that it is contributing to a solution,” a White House statement read.
The fallout from the Trump-Zelensky meeting has deepened divisions within Washington, with critics like Bolton pushing for resignations, while Trump and his allies maintain that the focus must remain on securing a resolution to the war.
