ABC News announced this week that longtime correspondent Terry Moran has been terminated following an online post that violated the network’s standards of objectivity.

The post, which targeted senior Trump advisor Stephen Miller, led to Moran’s removal after more than two decades with the network.

Moran, 65, made the comments on his podcast, The Weekly Show, and also posted a now-deleted message to X in which he described Miller as “richly endowed with the capacity for hatred.”

The remarks came in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to Los Angeles amid days of violent unrest.

“He’s a world-class hater,” Moran said on the podcast, referring to Miller.

“You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate.”

Moran also included a criticism of President Trump, stating, “Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred [is] only a means to an end, and that end is his own glorification. That’s his spiritual nourishment.”

ABC News initially suspended Moran last Sunday, and officially announced his firing on Tuesday.

“We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran and based on his recent post – which was a clear violation of ABC News policies – we have made the decision to not renew,” a spokesperson for the network said.

“At ABC News, we hold all of our reporters to the highest standards of objectivity, fairness and professionalism, and we remain committed to delivering straightforward, trusted journalism.”

Moran had served in a number of prominent roles during his time at ABC, including Chief Foreign Correspondent from 2013 to 2018, co-anchor of Nightline for eight years, and Chief White House Correspondent from 1999 to 2005.

The decision to cut ties with Moran prompted a strong reaction from comedian and commentator Jon Stewart, who criticized the network’s response on the latest episode of his own podcast.

“It’s a joke. They’re a f***ing joke,” Stewart said, adding that the network operates under “a facade that they somehow exist in a bubble.”

Stewart dismissed the firing as unnecessary and overblown. “Of course not. So stupid. No, for God’s sakes,” Stewart replied when asked if he agreed with ABC’s decision.

He also referenced ABC’s $15 million settlement with President Trump earlier this year after the network falsely described Trump as a “convicted rapist.”

“They shouldn’t have paid the $15 million, they shouldn’t have fired him,” Stewart said.

Moran’s firing comes at a time when media organizations are facing heightened scrutiny over political bias and journalistic standards.

ABC News has reiterated its commitment to neutrality, though the incident has sparked broader discussion on how media outlets handle political commentary from their on-air talent and correspondents.

Neither Moran nor ABC News has released further statements following the termination announcement.

As of Thursday evening, Moran had not commented publicly about the end of his contract or the network’s decision.
