Jon Stewart has voiced his frustration with anti-Trump Democrats and the media’s frequent use of the term “fascist,” arguing that the word has been overused to the point of losing its meaning.
The Daily Show host, 62, made the remarks in an off-air conversation with an audience member who questioned why he had been “light on the fascist message recently.”
“Oh, well, I’d tell my critics—shut up! You’re a fascist!” Stewart responded sarcastically before explaining why he has avoided using the term on his show since the 2024 election.

“I think if you cry ‘fascism’ at every administrative overreach, even the ones that are constitutionally OK, you will find yourself out of fascism bullets when the time really comes,” Stewart said.
He added that he is “very big on specificity and nuance.”
The comedian criticized the media for spending the last decade constantly branding Trump as a fascist, saying it had “numbed everybody” to the term.
“It was an anesthetic, and it got to where—what was the thing they litigated throughout this campaign? ‘He’s a fascist, he’s a terrible person, democracy is on the ballot.’
“Guess what lost at the [ballot box]? If you told us democracy was on the ballot, democracy got its ass kicked by a majority vote. So I am very cautious about when to know, like, yeah—hopefully I won’t do it the night after Kristallnacht… but it’s like when you put your dog down. It’s one of those things, like, you’re not quite sure, but I do understand how annoying that is.”

Stewart’s remarks come as The Breakfast Club host Charlamagne Tha God sparked backlash for changing his stance on Trump’s alleged threat to democracy.
The radio personality, 46, previously told CNN that Vice President Kamala Harris “should keep calling Trump a fascist,” but has since questioned whether Democrats truly believed their own rhetoric.
“Do y’all find it strange that now he’s won, they’re not calling him a threat to democracy, they’re not calling him a fascist?” Charlamagne asked on his show.
“It just makes you wonder how much of it did they really believe?”

Stewart has recently turned his sharp critiques toward Democrats, openly mocking Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer earlier this month.
The New York senator had attempted to attack Trump’s tariffs on Mexico and Canada by holding up a can of Corona beer and an avocado, warning that tariffs would impact the prices of beer, guacamole, and cheese for pizza.
Stewart ridiculed Schumer’s approach, criticizing Democrats for using him as their spokesperson.
“Your response to the trade war is to f**king tell us guacamole is made of avocados?” Stewart said with an exasperated expression.
He went on to plead with Democrats to “stop f***ing trotting Schumer out there every time Trump traverses into the unreal,” adding in a whisper: “He’s not good at this.”
Stewart further mocked the Democratic Party’s decision-making process, impersonating party strategists trying to find someone to counter Trump.
“‘Hey! Who should we get out there to effectively battle one of the most savvy presidential media manipulators in history?’” Stewart quipped.
“‘I don’t know, how about Schumer? He’s uninteresting but at least he’s monotone,’” he added, before joking that Schumer should “put on these readers and lower them on your nose” to look older.

The audience erupted in laughter and applause, but Stewart’s criticisms highlight growing frustration within liberal circles over the party’s messaging strategies as Trump remains a dominant force in American politics.
