During the inauguration of President Donald Trump on Monday, MSNBC host Joy Reid voiced strong criticism of the incoming administration, describing the event as a “takeover of the United States by a base mentality of greed and corruption.”
Reid shared her remarks during live coverage of the swearing-in ceremony, outlining her concerns about Trump’s policies and leadership style.
Reid highlighted the administration’s plans to issue over 200 executive orders, characterizing them as a sweeping effort to reshape the government.

She expressed particular alarm about proposals targeting immigration policy, including the potential elimination of birthright citizenship and mass deportations.
“The promise of the incoming administration is to wipe away the civic memory of Washington, to get rid of and to fire all of the people who normally transition as civil servants from one administration to the next,” Reid said.
She emphasized that the policy changes could significantly impact the country’s democratic and institutional norms.
Reid also criticized the presence of individuals at the inauguration who had been convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol breach.
She suggested that the event symbolized what she called a continuation of an attack on democratic institutions.
“We’re talking about an attempt to portray this peaceful transition of power with people who were convicted in the insurrection attempt, attending with the person who fulminated, who fomented the coup, being sworn in as president,” Reid said.
Reid took issue with Trump’s approach to staffing his administration, alleging that decisions were driven more by personal loyalty than qualifications or merit.
“Marco Rubio is the best choice of all of them,” she said, adding, “It’s no longer a content of their character or great meritocracy. Now it is people Trump likes to see on television. It’s people he thinks will praise him.”
She further criticized policies aimed at immigrants and transgender individuals, describing them as emblematic of the administration’s focus on divisive and exclusionary actions.
“These are some of the executive orders. The cruelty is the point of this coming administration,” Reid said.
Reid expressed skepticism about the ability of institutions to safeguard democracy under Trump’s leadership, pointing to what she described as their failure to prevent previous challenges to democratic norms.
“So it is very hard for me to look at this spectacle of the takeover of the United States by a base mentality of greed and corruption and say the institutions will save us. Because they’ve not done well for us so far,” she said.
