The case dates back to January 2019 when Smollett, a 42-year-old former star of Empire, claimed he was ambushed by two men shouting racial and homophobic slurs. According to his version, the attackers donned red MAGA hats, yelled “This is MAGA country,” put a noose around his neck, and doused him with bleach in an apparent hate crime.
Smollett’s allegations spurred a massive police investigation, costing the city of Chicago more than $130,000 in resources. Yet, it wasn’t long before the story fell apart.
Investigators uncovered that Smollett orchestrated the entire incident, hiring brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo to stage the attack in an attempt to garner sympathy and boost his career. Police also revealed that Smollett, dissatisfied with his $100,000-per-episode Empire salary, admitted to plotting the hoax as a publicity stunt.
Despite being convicted on five felony counts of disorderly conduct for lying to police, Smollett has vehemently denied the accusations, proclaiming his innocence even after his conviction. He has never admitted guilt, sticking to his original story as the facts crumble around him.

The incident, which was initially portrayed as a chilling example of racial and homophobic hatred in America, gained national attention. Liberal politicians and celebrities rushed to express their support, flooding social media with posts backing Smollett. Many of those tweets have since disappeared as the truth of the hoax emerged.
What happened today to @JussieSmollett must never be tolerated in this country. We must stand up and demand that we no longer give this hate safe harbor; that homophobia and racism have no place on our streets or in our hearts. We are with you, Jussie. https://t.co/o8ilPu68CM

.@JussieSmollett is one of the kindest, most gentle human beings I know. I’m praying for his quick recovery.
This was an attempted modern day lynching. No one should have to fear for their life because of their sexuality or color of their skin. We must confront this hate.

The Illinois Supreme Court’s decision has reignited frustration among conservatives who see the case as another example of how the justice system bends for Hollywood elites. Smollett’s release on a technicality is being criticized as a slap in the face to the taxpayers who footed the bill for his bogus claims.
For many, this isn’t just about Smollett. It’s about the double standards and the rush to believe narratives that align with certain political agendas. Smollett may have avoided further punishment, but the stain of this scandal isn’t going anywhere.
