The case dates back to January 2019 when Smollett, a 42-year-old former star of Empire, claimed he was ambushed by two men shouting racial and homophobic slurs. According to his version, the attackers donned red MAGA hats, yelled “This is MAGA country,” put a noose around his neck, and doused him with bleach in an apparent hate crime.

Smollett’s allegations spurred a massive police investigation, costing the city of Chicago more than $130,000 in resources. Yet, it wasn’t long before the story fell apart.

Investigators uncovered that Smollett orchestrated the entire incident, hiring brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo to stage the attack in an attempt to garner sympathy and boost his career.
