President Donald Trump has moved quickly to fulfill his pledge to secure the southern border after returning to office in January 2025, with federal officials reporting a significant decline in illegal border crossings compared with previous years.

The renewed enforcement follows four years of border policies under former President Joe Biden that allowed millions of illegal aliens to enter the United States, often without vetting or accountability.

Law enforcement agencies at both the federal and state levels have continued to pursue those individuals, focusing on public safety and immigration enforcement operations across border states.

In Texas, the Department of Public Safety has played a central role in those efforts. Earlier this month, Texas DPS troopers in Maverick County arrested seven illegal aliens who were found hiding in dense brush on private ranchland.

The operation involved multiple specialized units, including the DPS K-9 Unit and the Border Mounted Patrol.

According to Texas DPS, the K-9 unit tracked a total of 11 miles through rugged terrain to locate the individuals.

Authorities said some of the seven had previously been deported from the United States, while others had criminal histories.

Those criminal backgrounds included assault and offenses involving a child predator, according to information released by law enforcement.

The Maverick County arrests were part of broader enforcement activity that has continued into the new year.

In late December 2025 a Texas DPS pursuit of a suspected human smuggler who was transporting ten illegal aliens.

That incident ended in a crash involving a commercial vehicle, highlighting the dangers associated with human smuggling operations and high-speed pursuits near the border.

Federal and state officials have emphasized that border security operations are not limited to apprehending individuals crossing illegally, but also target organized smuggling networks that profit from transporting illegal aliens deeper into the interior of the country.

Texas DPS has repeatedly stated that cooperation with U.S. Border Patrol remains a key component of its strategy.

The renewed enforcement push has also revived debate over the constitutional role of the federal government in border security.

Article IV, Section 4 of the United States Constitution outlines the responsibility of the federal government to protect states against invasion.

“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence,” Article IV, Section 4 of the United States Constitution states.

Supporters of the administration’s approach argue that the sharp reduction in illegal crossings reflects a return to enforcement of existing immigration law.

Officials aligned with the Trump administration have said that reestablishing deterrence at the border is critical to national security and public safety.

While several blue states have resisted federal immigration enforcement efforts and limited cooperation with federal authorities, Texas has taken a different approach.

Texas DPS has continued to work closely with U.S. Border Patrol agents, deploying state resources to assist with tracking, apprehensions, and joint operations along the border and in rural areas where illegal aliens attempt to evade detection.

State officials have said the collaboration is intended to protect residents, landowners, and communities affected by illegal crossings, smuggling activity, and repeat offenders who reenter the country after deportation.

As border crossings decline, law enforcement agencies are continuing operations aimed at locating and removing illegal aliens who entered the country during previous years.

Texas DPS has indicated that similar operations involving K-9 units, mounted patrols, and aerial surveillance will continue in coordination with federal authorities.

Under President Trump’s leadership, administration officials have said that border enforcement will remain a priority, with an emphasis on restoring the rule of law and reducing the public safety risks associated with illegal immigration.
