The Los Angeles Police Department has ended its temporary security detail at Kamala Harris’ residence in Brentwood, California, following internal criticism that crime-fighting units were being diverted to protect her.
A dozen officers from the LAPD’s Metro Division had been assigned to guard Harris’ mansion after President Donald Trump revoked her Secret Service protection last week.
Harris had continued receiving protection under an extension granted by Joe Biden, but that extension expired with Trump’s order.
By Saturday, LAPD officers were no longer posted outside the Brentwood home, according to sources cited by the Los Angeles Times.
The deployment had sparked controversy within the department after officers were reassigned from crime suppression duties in the San Fernando Valley to provide security for Harris.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing rank-and-file officers, issued a strong statement condemning the move.
“Every now and then common-sense prevails and we are happy to report that the Metro officers assigned to protect the multi-millionaire failed presidential candidate are back on the street fighting crime,” the board said.

Mayor Karen Bass had directed LAPD to coordinate with the California Highway Patrol to ensure Harris received security coverage after Trump’s decision.
Bass criticized the president’s action as an act of “political retaliation.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was required to authorize CHP involvement, has not directly confirmed his role in arranging protection.
His office issued a statement saying, “the safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulse.”
Local news outlets reported that a FOX 11 helicopter captured images earlier this week of LAPD officers stationed outside Harris’ Brentwood property.
However, the assignment was always considered temporary, with the expectation that Harris would secure private protection.
The controversy comes as Harris prepares for a 15-stop international book tour to promote her memoir, 107 Days, a book that recounts her failed presidential campaign in 2024.
Under current federal law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office.
That is in contrast to former presidents, who receive lifetime protection.
Harris’ coverage had already exceeded the standard timeframe due to the extension approved during the Biden-Harris administration.
The debate over the use of city police resources underscores broader concerns about public safety in Los Angeles, where crime trends have placed pressure on law enforcement staffing.
The LAPD’s decision to remove its officers from Harris’ detail signaled an effort to redirect resources back to regular policing duties while leaving any further security arrangements to Harris and state officials.
The move concludes a week of political and public scrutiny over how taxpayer-funded security should be allocated, particularly as Harris transitions into private life and begins her book promotion schedule.
