As Israel carries out targeted strikes against Iranian military facilities, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris face criticism over personal engagements amid rising concerns about the U.S. administration’s response to the escalating Middle East crisis.

President Joe Biden joined Vice President Kamala Harris during the first day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago.

Biden spent part of the weekend traveling to Delaware, while Harris attended a campaign rally in Houston, which featured a free concert by pop star Beyoncé.

The Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the Israel-Iran confrontation, particularly during a time of heightened alert in the region, has drawn pointed criticism from lawmakers and political commentators.

Republican Representative Mike Waltz of Florida questioned the administration’s priorities, asking, “Biden on his way in Delaware and Harris on stage with Beyoncé. Even though the U.S. was apparently informed the Israel strikes on Iran would begin tonight? Who is in the White House?”

Photos of Biden on the tarmac in Philadelphia en route to Delaware circulated online alongside images from Harris’s Houston rally.

Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also commented on social media, “Here’s a photo of Biden sitting on the tarmac in Philadelphia on his way to vacation in Delaware. Kamala Harris is partying with Beyoncé in Houston. All while a major war breaks out in Iran. Who is running our country???”

Conservative radio host Mark Levin added to the criticism, writing, “Israel has launched its military response to Iran and Kamala is with Beyoncé, Biden is headed to Delaware.” Levin expressed concerns that the president and vice president’s activities during a critical international event reflect a lack of seriousness about foreign policy.

Early on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed a series of strikes against Iranian military installations.

The IDF’s actions were in response to continuous attacks on Israel by Iran and its regional allies since October 7.

Israeli military sources reported that their targeted operations aim to disable sites suspected of supporting hostile forces in Gaza and other areas.

The Biden-Harris administration’s apparent absence from immediate responses has prompted questions about the U.S. stance on the Middle Eastern conflict.

Republican Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska urged the administration to make its position clear, writing, “The Biden-Harris administration needs to speak loud and clear: The U.S. stands with Israel as it does what it needs to do to stop Iran and its proxies from trying to wipe Israel off the map.”

Sullivan also voiced support for Israel’s efforts, stating, “We should applaud Israel for doing the difficult and dangerous work of reestablishing deterrence. Iran responds to strength and will continue to fund terrorist proxies and level strikes against Israel if it believes there are no consequences. Tonight, Iran is learning that there are consequences for its actions.”

Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, who has been vocal in his criticism of the administration’s foreign policy, commented that current U.S. policies have allowed Iran’s influence to expand, stating, “If Kamala wants to know who’s responsible for the crisis Israel & the world faces from Iran, take a look in the mirror. It’s her policies that let Iran loose and gave the green light to their terrorism.”

Israel’s airstrikes in Iran come after repeated hostilities in the region, which have placed a spotlight on U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

The Biden-Harris administration’s past moves, including the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and negotiations with Iran over its nuclear ambitions, have raised concerns among Republican leaders about the consistency of U.S. involvement in Middle Eastern affairs.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned that U.S. allies in the region face increased vulnerability, which he argues has further destabilized the Middle East.

Without a firm U.S. stance, critics argue, both allies and adversaries could interpret the administration’s current approach as a lack of engagement, potentially emboldening nations like Iran to escalate their actions.

Republican leaders have called for Biden and Harris to show more direct support for Israel’s efforts to defend itself, emphasizing that a strong U.S. position in the region remains essential to American security interests.

With Israel’s ongoing strikes and Iran’s continued support for groups hostile to Israel, experts and lawmakers are urging the U.S. administration to take a clearer stand to prevent a further slide into prolonged conflict.
