Former Vice President Kamala Harris revealed in her new book 107 Days that her team prepared her for potential crude personal attacks during her debate against President Donald Trump in the 2024 election cycle, as reported by Fox News.

The book, released Tuesday, recounts Harris’s strategy sessions ahead of the September 2024 presidential debate and her short-lived campaign after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.

Democratic presidential candidate former vice president Joe Biden and Democratic presidential candidate U.S. senator Kamala Harris of California speaks the second night of the Democratic presidential debates at the Fox Theatre in Detroit on Tuesday, July 31, 2019.

Harris wrote that she and her advisers gathered in the basement of Howard University, her alma mater, to prepare for the debate. She said she was supported by a veteran trial attorney she likened to a “wartime consigliere.”

Her team, she noted, created detailed cards for “every nuance of every subject” that she was expected to master before facing Trump on stage.

Beyond policy preparation, Harris said advisers also prepared her for “the painful matter of imagining what kinds of personal attacks Trump might mount against me.” One adviser suggested Trump could ask if Harris had ever had an abortion.

“If he did, the response would be: That’s none of your business and that’s not what we’re here for,” Harris wrote.

She added that another adviser made “a dark joke” that if Trump became personal, she should ask if he used Viagra. Other potential responses included raising the question of whether Trump had ever paid for an abortion.

While abortion was discussed during the debate, Harris acknowledged that Trump avoided any such personal exchanges. “In the end, he didn’t go down that track,” Harris wrote.

“He probably knew a question like that would be exceedingly thin ice for him—and would infuriate just about every woman in America.”

Harris emphasized that she did not approach debate preparation by memorizing lines. “I am not a trained seal; I’m not going to memorize lines and spout them. I have to understand the logic and building blocks of every argument so I can present it clearly and defend it persuasively,” she wrote.

Her book also revisits the final months of her campaign after Biden left the race in July 2024 due to concerns over his mental fitness. Harris became the Democratic nominee but was unable to defeat Trump, ultimately losing all seven battleground states in the November 4 election.

The 2024 campaign marked Harris’s highest point on the national stage, but 107 Days focuses heavily on her preparation and strategy rather than policy achievements, giving a behind-the-scenes look at her efforts to challenge Trump before her defeat.
