FBI Director Kash Patel confronted Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.) during a House Appropriations Committee hearing on Wednesday, following her accusation that Patel and President Donald Trump are using Patel’s 2023 book as a political hit list.
The exchange took place after Dean referenced an appendix in Patel’s book, Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth, and the Battle for Our Democracy, which includes names of political figures. Dean claimed the list has led to FBI investigations and executive orders targeting individuals named in the publication.
“It concerns me how many people from this blueprint have been targeted with executive orders and FBI investigations,” Dean said.
“When can I, a former impeachment manager, expect the FBI at my door?”

Patel, who took over leadership of the FBI under President Trump’s administration, responded directly.
“Ma’am,” Patel said.
“You want to know who was targeted by a weaponized FBI? Me.”

Patel continued, “You want to know how and why? You want to know what I’m doing to fix it?”
Dean attempted to change the subject, saying, “Let me move on,” but Patel pressed on.
“Well, you should read the book because there’s no enemies list in that book,” he told Dean.
He described the individuals listed in the appendix as people “that violated their constitutional obligations and their duties to the American people.”
“They were rightly called out — and you should give that book to every one of your constituents so they can read about it,” Patel said.
Dean responded that she would not distribute the book to residents of Pennsylvania’s 4th Congressional District. Patel replied, “That’s their loss.”

Patel’s 2023 book has drawn attention for its detailed criticism of officials involved in what he describes as politically motivated investigations and actions taken against members of the Trump administration.
The appendix at the center of Wednesday’s hearing contains a list of individuals Patel claims were involved in abuses of government power.
During his Senate confirmation hearing, Patel confirmed that he had been subpoenaed and required to testify before a federal grand jury.
This was part of former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the handling of presidential documents retained by President Trump at Mar-a-Lago following his first term.
That investigation resulted in criminal charges that were ultimately dismissed in July of last year.
The case sparked widespread debate over what many considered to be politically charged legal action aimed at the president.
Patel has maintained that the federal government’s use of law enforcement and intelligence powers against political opponents must be reformed.
He has stated in both testimony and public appearances that his work at the FBI is focused on preventing future abuse and restoring public trust.
The hearing underscored growing tensions between congressional Democrats and FBI leadership over the agency’s recent direction.
Patel’s appointment as FBI Director marked a shift in the bureau’s leadership, with critics claiming a political agenda is being pursued under the current administration.
The contentious exchange between Patel and Dean is one of several confrontations that have taken place in recent months as lawmakers question the politicization of federal law enforcement and its impact on both transparency and civil liberties.
