FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed on Thursday’s broadcast of Fox News Channel’s Hannity that investigators located multiple “burn bags” and hard drives in a secure room inside the J. Edgar Hoover Building, the FBI’s headquarters.

The revelation came during an interview with host Sean Hannity, who asked Patel about the findings and whether they came as a surprise given Patel’s previous work with then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes.

“Sean, I was blown away,” Patel said. “But sadly, it’s come to be expected in this town when corrupt bureaucrats weaponize and destroy law enforcement like predecessors of mine did at the FBI. And thankfully, Donald Trump’s mandate and election victory was for transparency and accountability.”

Patel referenced his prior involvement in uncovering what became known as the “Russiagate” investigation, working alongside Nunes, former Rep. Trey Gowdy, and former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe (now Director of the CIA).

He noted that the House Intelligence Committee’s work had exposed “FISA abuses, the corruption of political parties, and the lies to a federal court just to illegally surveil a presidential candidate.”

Despite those earlier investigations, Patel said he was taken aback by the recent discovery.

“Sadly, we found a room locked away in the Hoover building that contained burn bags,” he told Hannity.

“Just for your audience, Sean, a burn bag is a government bag that is specifically created to destroy classified evidence and shred and burn it. Hence the name burn bag. We didn’t find one. We found seven.”

In addition to the burn bags, Patel said the room contained hard drives from former FBI leadership involved in the early stages of the Russia investigation.

“We found hard drives from our predecessors and prior FBI leadership and folks like Page, Strzok, Comey, McCabe — the list goes on from Russiagate. The names were strewn all over these materials,” Patel said.

When pressed by Hannity about the contents of the materials, Patel noted that the Justice Department has limits on what it can publicly discuss while certain matters are under review.

“We can’t deny or confirm what we’re looking at,” Patel said.

“But what we can discuss is what we’ve publicly disclosed. And these documents have been publicly disclosed because the greatest way to educate and bring along the American public for a transparency initiative and accountability under President Trump is to give them the documents.”

Patel emphasized that releasing information to the public is part of a broader effort to reform the FBI under President Trump’s administration.

“Step one is by cleaning house inside the walls of Hoover,” Patel said.

The FBI has not released an official statement detailing the origin of the burn bags or the hard drives, nor has it confirmed whether the recovered materials will lead to new investigations or disciplinary actions against former officials.

The discovery, however, adds another chapter to the ongoing scrutiny of the FBI’s handling of politically sensitive investigations and its internal record-keeping practices.
