FBI Director Kash Patel stated in an interview Wednesday night that details regarding the presence of FBI sources in and around the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, will soon be released to the public.
The comments came during an appearance on Fox News’ Special Report with host Bret Baier.
Patel, who was appointed FBI Director earlier this year, addressed longstanding questions surrounding the role of confidential human sources and their activity at the Capitol during the events of January 6.

The information, which has not been fully disclosed to the public, has been the subject of scrutiny in congressional hearings and ongoing investigations.
“But more importantly, people have had questions about January 6th and whether or not there were FBI sources, not agent sources, on the ground during January 6th,” Patel told Baier.
“I told you I would get you the definitive answer to that, and we have. We are in the process, again, of working with our partners to divulge that information, and it is coming.”
He added, “I will tell you this, the answer to that question will surprise and shock people because of what past FBI leaders have said about it.”

Former FBI Director Christopher Wray previously acknowledged in congressional testimony that there were at least 26 FBI confidential human sources in or around the Capitol on January 6.
However, he maintained that they were not FBI agents.
When asked by Baier if that number was accurate or if more information had since come to light, Patel confirmed it as only part of the broader picture.
“I can say that that is definitely a piece of the truth,” Patel said.
“Why it took a ton of time and questioning in Congress for the Director to get that point is what I’m trying to eliminate from the process. If Congress asks you a question under oath—whether or not there were sources in and around January 6th at the Capitol—you as Director of the FBI need to know that and not deflect and give a D.C. answer.”
Baier noted that “eventually, everybody’s going to know the whole picture.”
Patel responded, “Yeah, because the American people deserve that.”
Patel also spoke about his role on January 6, 2021, as Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense.
He reiterated that the Trump administration had pre-authorized National Guard support in advance of that day, and that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declined the offer.
“Remember, I was Chief of Staff for the Department of Defense on January 6th. We said that we were ready and the President had previously authorized the National Guard to be there days in advance,” Patel said.
“What happens now, years later? We were right.”
He criticized the handling of security on Capitol Hill and questioned why so many resources were spent on televised hearings rather than addressing the security gaps that led to the breach.
“Instead of figuring out how to prevent security lapses like that ever again, the American public spent tens of millions of dollars and countless hours on TV listening to conspiracy theories because those in positions of leadership failed to tell the American public the truth,” Patel said.

Patel confirmed that additional information regarding federal sources, their roles, and the chain of decision-making leading up to January 6 will be made available to Congress and the public.
He indicated the findings would contradict prior official statements and shed light on operational decisions made that day.
Congressional interest in the FBI’s presence at the Capitol remains high, with multiple lawmakers demanding full transparency.
Further disclosures are expected in the coming weeks.
