White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre faced immediate criticism after misstating poll results regarding public approval of Joe Biden’s recent pardon of his son, Hunter Biden.
The incident occurred during her first televised press briefing since the pardon was announced on Sunday.
President Biden issued a sweeping pardon for Hunter Biden, despite having previously stated he would not do so. Earlier this year, Hunter Biden was convicted in two separate federal cases.

In June, he was convicted of three felony gun charges after lying on a mandatory gun purchase form by denying illegal drug use.
In September, he pleaded guilty to federal tax charges. For over a year, both President Biden and Jean-Pierre had repeatedly insisted that a pardon was not forthcoming.
During the press briefing, Jean-Pierre was questioned extensively by reporters about the president’s decision.
In her defense of the pardon, she referenced a poll to suggest that a majority of Americans supported the move.
“I think it’s important to note here, as you’re asking me these questions—important questions to ask—that there was a poll, a U.S. Gov [sic] poll that came out that some of you all reported on it,” she stated. “And it said 64% of the American people agree with the pardon—64% of the American people. So, we get a sense of where the American people are on this. Obviously, it’s one poll, but it gives you a little bit of insight. Sixty-four percent is nothing to sneeze at.”
She reiterated the point later in the briefing: “I called out the U.S. Gov [sic]. poll where 64% of Americans, that’s not a small number, agree with the president’s decision to pardon his son.”
However, the poll Jean-Pierre cited was actually from YouGov, not “U.S. Gov,” which does not exist. Furthermore, the poll indicated that 64% of Democrats supported the pardon, not 64% of the general American population. According to the poll results, only 34% of Americans overall “strongly” or “somewhat” approved of the pardon, while 50% “strongly” or “somewhat” disapproved.
The misrepresentation was quickly highlighted by observers on social media. Elias Atienza, features editor at Check Your Fact, pointed out the error: “She’s wrong. The YouGov poll shows 64% of Democrats, not 64% of Americans, supported the pardon. 34% of Americans overall supported it, with 50% disapproving.”

Bonchie from RedState commented, “This is a psychotic level of lying. The kind of thing someone used to get shamed from polite society over. Of course, she’ll be on MSNBC by next year.”

Fox News columnist David Marcus questioned the press secretary’s role, asking, “Why is she even up there?”
The account Chicks On The Right addressed Jean-Pierre directly on social media: “Couldn’t you try to suck a little less during these last few weeks, @PressSec? Or just lie a little less? My GOD you’re awful. Just absolutely dreadful.”

Greg Price, deputy rapid response director for Trump 2024, corrected her statement: “It’s pronounced YouGov and it showed 64% of Democrats approved of the pardon while just 34% did overall. Worst Press Sec ever.”
