Should we be surprised that alleged Joe Biden Regency ‘politburo’ member Ron Klain decided to cooperate with the House Oversight Committee? Fellow senior advisers such as Annie Tomasini and Anthony Bernal took the Fifth when asked to testify about Biden’s cognitive incapacity while President and who really ran the White House. Even Biden’s doctor, Kevin O’Connor, took Five rather than rely on HIPAA.
Biden’s former chief of staff, however, decided to cooperate, getting praise for his willingness to testify from committee members of both parties. And while Klain doesn’t flat-out declare Biden incompetent during his tenure as president, Klain told the committee that his decline was getting obvious in the last year. It was so obvious, Klain testified, that both his national security adviser and Hillary Clinton had decided that he was not “politically viable,” apparently well before his disastrous debate exposed his cognitive crisis:
Former White House chief of staff Ron Klain revealed Thursday that former President Joe Biden wasn’t seen as “politically viable” by either his national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, or by ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during his final year in office, a source told The Post. …
In the sitdown, Klain denied that Biden, now 82, lacked the cognitive acuity to govern or that he was too old to run for re-election in 2024, according to a source familiar with his remarks.
But the longtime adviser admitted his boss was “less energetic,” had a poorer memory and frequently mixed up names — a problem that worsened with time, the source added.
Sullivan confided to Klain that Biden was also “less effective” in 2024 than in 2022, the source noted.
Not “politically viable,” eh? For some context, recall that Klain left the White House nearly 2023 to go back into the private sector for a while. However, Klain came back to work on Biden’s presidential campaign and ran the debate-prep exercises before the June 27 debate on CNN. Klain has already told other authors in books on the election that Biden couldn’t complete a rehearsal because he quickly got tired and/or distracted. Here’s the money excerpt from Uncharted:
Klain, the White House chief of staff from 2021 to 2023, was “startled” by Biden’s declining mental and physical state when he went back to work for the octogenarian president in June 2024, according to excerpts from Chris Whipple’s upcoming book Uncharted published in the Guardian.
Klain had “never seen [Biden] so exhausted and out of it,” Whipple writes. “Biden was unaware of what was happening in his own campaign. Halfway through the session, the president excused himself and went off to sit by the pool.” …
Klain had to cut short the two mock debates he had organized for Biden.
“The first was scheduled to last 90 minutes but Klain called it off after 45. The president’s voice was shot and so was his grasp of the subject,” Whipple writes. Less than 30 minutes into the second mock debate, Biden went off to bed, saying he was “just too tired to continue,” according to Whipple.
It seems very strange that Klain would have needed Sullivan or Clinton at that point to tell him that Biden wasn’t “politically viable.” Like the line in the film Falling Down, all of the signs of failing viability had long been present by that point:
That was true before Klain left, for that matter. Someone sent the Easter Bunny to block Biden from engaging with reporters and attendees at the April 2022 Easter Egg Roll. That decision strongly indicates that the Biden Regency politburo knew that Biden had ceased being “politically viable” in extemporaneous exchanges by that point.
That also refutes Hunter Biden’s story that his father’s poor performance was due to a dose of Ambien the night before. “He flew around the world. He’s 81 years old. He’s tired,” Hunter told podcaster Andrew Callaghan. “They give him Ambien to be able to sleep and he gets up on the stage and looks like a deer in the headlights.” First off, the effects of Ambien wouldn’t last until 9 pm the following night, which is one reason that explanation is ridiculous. But more importantly, Klain has already revealed that Biden couldn’t get through the rehearsal debates either. And it certainly sounds as though Biden didn’t have any trouble falling asleep after just 30 minutes in the second rehearsal.
Klain told the committee that he’d never been told about Ambien. As committee chair James Comer points out, though, Ambien is known for its cognitive-altering properties, especially when given to the elderly. That in itself would raise questions about fitness for office. However, it seems far more likely that Hunter pulled the Ambien story from the same place as the rest of the excuses and claims he’s used in his life.
Let’s also not forget the damning impression left by the Robert Hur deposition tapes, too. Those interviews took place in early October 2023, nearly nine months before the debate in late June 2024. Biden couldn’t even recall the key dates of his own life without constant help from his attorney. At times, Biden couldn’t even complete his own thoughts. His viability had clearly dissipated at that point in every context. No one who listens to those tapes can come away thinking that Biden had the cognitive capacity to hold his office and make all the necessary decisions about the exercise of its constitutional authority. Klain and others may have been in some denial due to personal affection for Biden, but his testimony makes it clear that the denial only went so far.
So if Sullivan, Klain, and Hillary Clinton knew that Biden wasn’t “politically viable” during the last year, why didn’t they do anything about it? Also, they couldn’t have been the only three Democrats who knew; why didn’t they allow a competitive primary in 2024 to deal with the situation, even if they didn’t want to force Biden to resign? The answer likely is that they were happy with the ‘politburo’ arrangement, either because it afforded them power, or they preferred those who had the real power over other challengers to it.
Who were the real powers behind the throne, manipulating Biden to mask their unconstitutional regency? That’s what the House Oversight Committee needs to expose. Maybe Klain helped them advance that ball by refusing to hide behind the Fifth Amendment. That contrast makes it clear the direction this investigation should take to get those answers.
