Noem’s confirmation follows a smooth process, with no major obstacles during her hearing.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee advanced her nomination earlier by a 13–2 vote, with only two Democrats opposing her at that stage.
Kristi Noem’s confirmation marks the fourth cabinet position filled under the Trump administration, following Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
As the new head of DHS, Noem will oversee a department central to the administration’s priorities, including border security, immigration enforcement, and counterterrorism efforts.
The Trump administration has emphasized securing the southern border as a key objective.
Recent actions include resuming construction of the border wall, deploying military personnel to assist with border enforcement, and ending Biden-era parole programs.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also launched nationwide deportation operations as part of what Trump has described as a “historic” effort to curb illegal immigration.
During her confirmation hearing, Noem outlined her vision for the department, emphasizing border security as a primary focus.
“As a nation, we have the right and the responsibility to secure our borders against those who would do us harm,” she stated.
“We must create a fair and lawful immigration system that is efficient, effective, and reflects our values.”
She also highlighted other critical areas within the DHS mission, including cybersecurity, disaster relief, and counterterrorism.
“We must be vigilant, proactive, and innovative to protect the homeland,” Noem said, stressing the importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure and responding to natural disasters and security threats.
Noem addressed questions during her hearing about how she would work with Tom Homan, who has been designated as the administration’s border czar to lead deportation efforts.
She confirmed a strong working relationship with Homan, stating, “We work very well together and talk and communicate all the time. We’ll be working together on a daily basis when we’re in our positions under the new administration.”
Noem also assured senators that her department would retain full authority over its responsibilities.
“There’s no authority being planned to be taken away from the department or myself if I’m in the role,” she added.
As governor of South Dakota, Noem gained experience with disaster response, working alongside federal officials to address flooding in the state in June 2021.
She also deployed the South Dakota National Guard to assist with border security efforts in Texas during the Biden-Harris administration and publicly pledged not to accept migrants under Biden-era policies.
Her leadership experience and alignment with the Trump administration’s immigration priorities were highlighted as key qualifications during the confirmation process.
“The challenges in front of us are extremely significant, and we must secure our borders against illegal trafficking and immigration,” Noem said.
Noem takes charge of the Department of Homeland Security at a time when immigration and border security remain top priorities for the administration.
Acting Secretary Benjamine Huffman has issued several memos since Trump’s inauguration, directing reviews of parole policies and expanding the ability to expedite deportations for recently arrived illegal alienss.
Noem is expected to continue these initiatives while addressing broader DHS responsibilities.
Her confirmation signals the administration’s commitment to advancing its agenda on border security and enforcing immigration laws.
With her experience and alignment with the administration’s goals, Noem’s leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in the Trump administration’s efforts to strengthen national security.
