Lebanon to Iran and Europeans: Butt Out

Iran is making a stink about Israel’s war against Hezbollah, claiming that attacks in Southern Lebanon violate the ceasefire it made with the United States. 

First of all, that’s not close to being true; they are just moving the goalposts to test President Trump’s resolve, which is hardly unusual behavior either for Iran or in negotiations over the end of a war. People act like agreements like this are written in stone, like a contract, when in fact they are maneuvers often done as part of negotiations between belligerents.

As I wrote in my earlier piece, the European “allies” who have jumped into the negotiations as if they have a say are all demanding that the United States and Israel abide by Iran’s demands—they are taking Iran’s side, in other words—as if Iran has sovereignty over Lebanon, and as if Hezbollah were the ruling government in the country. 

Neither is true, and Lebanon wants everybody caterwauling about this ceasefire violation to shut the f— up.

Lebanon’s message is unambiguous: Iran doesn’t speak for us. Europe doesn’t speak for us. Hezbollah is, effectively, an enemy of the Lebanese government. And its negotiations with Israel are none of their business.

Go away. We don’t want you and your worthless opinions messing things up. 

Iran constantly claims it does nothing outside its borders and denies its use of proxies to target and invade other countries.

The instincts of our “allies” are unerringly bad. They are not just useless in this conflict. They have been active supporters of Iran in many ways, not the least of which is denying the use of their airspace and our bases. American bombing missions have, in some cases, made the trips of our bombers from the UK more than twice as long as necessary.

Now they are undermining our negotiations with Iran. They are siding with Iran and Hezbollah, which isn’t even the government of Lebanon, and which the Lebanese government wants disarmed. It may not love the necessary means, but it shares the end with Israel, and is apparently incapable of doing the dirty work.

As President Trump said, NATO was tested, and NATO badly failed the test. They had a chance to help, but instead made things worse. They have, instead, chosen Iran’s side in this war.
