Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce drew criticism online following a Fourth of July message celebrating American unity and patriotism.

Kelce, who recently retired from the NFL after 13 seasons, shared his Independence Day sentiments on social media Friday, prompting immediate reaction in the comment section.

“Man I love the 4th! One of the great days we all can set aside our differences in this country, and enjoy the one thing we all share in common. That we are American! Cheers to you oh beautiful America,” he posted. pic.twitter.com/GDmz6jxh32

“Man I love the 4th! One of the great days we all can set aside our differences in this country, and enjoy the one thing we all share in common. That we are American!” Kelce wrote.

“Cheers to you oh beautiful America.”

The post, shared on Instagram, was met with backlash from several users who accused the former NFL star of being out of touch or insensitive.

The criticism appeared to escalate shortly after President Donald Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill earlier in the day—a comprehensive legislative package that sparked partisan reactions on both sides.

“Set aside differences? One party wants to feed children. The other wants to feed brown people to alligators,” one user responded.

Another added, “Unfortunately Jason this is not real life for many. They signed the worst bill for so many Americans today just to rub it in our faces. I know it’s hard to understand, but so many will suffer.”

A separate commenter labeled Kelce’s post “tone deaf.”

Despite the pushback, Kelce’s original message remained visible, and he did not respond to the criticism publicly.

As of Saturday, the post had accumulated thousands of likes and shares, with many users defending the former Eagles captain’s remarks and expressing frustration at the reaction.

Kelce retired from professional football in March 2024 after a highly decorated career that included six Pro Bowl selections, five All-Pro honors, and a Super Bowl victory in 2018.

Known for his leadership and intensity on the field, Kelce has remained a visible public figure in Philadelphia and beyond.

He is also the older brother of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

The timing of Kelce’s post—on the nation’s 249th Independence Day—highlighted an ongoing divide over expressions of patriotism, particularly among public figures.

While some users expressed agreement with Kelce’s call for unity, others focused on recent legislative developments, namely the One Big Beautiful Bill signed by President Trump just hours earlier.

The legislation, which passed the House by a narrow margin, includes sweeping changes to domestic policy and was a centerpiece of the administration’s post-election agenda.

Critics of the bill voiced concerns online throughout the day, and Kelce’s message quickly became a flashpoint amid the broader reaction.

The episode underscores the increasingly polarized environment surrounding political discourse and national celebrations, even when public figures refrain from endorsing specific policies or politicians.
