If you squint between the lines, you might find some truth in the legacy media’s reporting.
USAToday describes Huy Quoc Phan as one of the “thousands of people who arrived as refugees after the end of the Vietnam War and are now being targeted for removal” by President Donald Trump’s administration.
But Phan is more than a refugee. He’s a husband, a step-father, a father – and a convicted felon. Phan served 15 years in prison for participating in a robbery with four men who beat a shopkeeper to death, according to USAToday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims Phan is a “criminal illegal alien” who was “convicted of voluntary manslaughter, false imprisonment, and robbery and was sentenced to 17 years in prison in 2000. He had a final order of removal.” (RELATED: Deranged Legacy Media Twists Itself Into Pretzel To Avoid Crediting Trump)

Phan arrived in the United States in the early 1990s, according to USAToday. He was likely shielded from deportation in his younger years by a 2008 “memorandum of understanding” between the United States and Vietnam. The memorandum exempted Vietnamese citizens from deportation, provided they had arrived in the United States before July 12, 1995. But the memorandum also notes that the United States “will carry out the repatriation of Vietnamese citizens who violated U.S. law in accordance with U.S. and international law and the provisions of this Agreement.”
Now, Phan is facing deportation to his country of birth, Vietnam.
“[Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE)] New Orleans agents arrested Phan on April 14, and he will remain in custody until he is deported,” DHS posted to X on May 28. His wife is considering moving to Vietnam to be with her husband, according to USAToday.
“Under President Trump and [Homeland Security Secretary Kristi] Noem’s leadership, [ICE] is continuing to protect Americans by detaining and removing criminal aliens,” Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), said to the outlet.
Indeed, it seems appropriate to doubt the societal contributions of a man who, after being taken in by the United States, proceeded to participate in a robbery where an innocent man was bludgeoned to death. The legacy media must be hard-pressed for sob stories.
Or maybe they just really like criminals. The Democrat Party’s favorite illegal migrant, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, is back in the United States and facing criminal charges related to human smuggling.
“The grand jury found that over the past nine years, Abrego Garcia has played a significant role in an alien smuggling ring,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said. “They found this was his full time job, not a contractor — he was a smuggler of humans and children and women.”
Abrego Garcia was previously accused of domestic abuse by his wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, who claimed her husband once “punched, scratched me on my left eye, leaving me bleeding.” (RELATED: Liberals Have Finally Found A Group Of Refugees They Don’t Want)

Not all migrants are accused of smuggling humans. Some, like Russian national Kseniia Petrova, are simply accused of smuggling biological materials. The Trump administration arrested and charged Petrova for “allegedly attempting to smuggle clawed frog embryos and embryonic samples into the United States,” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The government references a series of suspicious text messages between Petrova and one of her colleagues.
“What is your plan to pass the American Customs with samples? This is the most delicate place of the trajectory,” the colleague allegedly texted Petrova, informing the Russian scientist that she was mandated to declare the biological materials.
“No plan yet. I won’t be able to swallow them,” Petrova allegedly replied.
The New York Times published a flattering profile of the scientist in the immediate aftermath of her detention, byline reading: “She Worked in a Harvard Lab to Reverse Aging, Until ICE Jailed Her.” Truly a masterclass in burying the lede.
