As President Donald Trump prepares to deliver his first congressional address since returning to the White House, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has some strategic advice for her fellow Democrats: keep quiet and let him squirm.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Pelosi urged Democrats not to react visibly to Trump’s speech, saying, “Any demonstration of disagreement, whether it’s visual or whatever, just let him stew in his own juice.”

US Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi arrives at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart for the funeral of U.S. Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. in Newark, NJ on Thursday May 2, 2024. Donald M. Payne, Jr. died at 65 years old in his sixth term as US Congressman for New Jersey.

She also warned them not to give Trump or Republicans any ammunition, adding, “Don’t be any grist for the mill to say this was inappropriate,” as reported by Fox News.

The 47th president is set to speak before both chambers of Congress on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Eastern, marking his first major address to Congress since his historic return to the Oval Office.

While the event resembles a State of the Union speech, it lacks the official designation since Trump was not in office the previous year. The president has teased a bold message, declaring on Truth Social, “TOMORROW NIGHT WILL BE BIG. I WILL TELL IT LIKE IT IS!”

Pelosi’s latest advice comes as no surprise given her past antics. During Trump’s 2020 State of the Union address, she infamously tore up his speech while standing behind him—a petty display that conservatives widely criticized as disrespectful.

Reflecting on the incident, Pelosi told The Washington Post that she had been making small tears on each page throughout the speech. “Then, when I saw that every page was a lie, I had to tear it up,” she claimed, before adding, “Parchment is very hard to tear.”

Now, instead of encouraging open defiance, Pelosi is advising Democrats to play it safe—at least those in vulnerable districts. She suggested that only members in deep-blue strongholds should be vocal about challenging Trump, rather than the entire caucus creating a spectacle.

“The most important thing in all of this is to prioritize,” she said, praising House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for his leadership.

She also downplayed grandstanding efforts from fellow Democrats, saying, “Members will say I want this, I want that. Yeah, that’s interesting, talk about that at home.”

Pelosi made it clear that Democrats should focus not on Trump’s presidency but on the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, which she sees as their best opportunity to regain power.

“It’s not four years, it’s not even two years. It’s between March and September. Where are the numbers?” she asked, emphasizing the urgency of flipping the House. “This fall is everything. And we only need three seats. I don’t want three seats, I want many more than that.”

While Pelosi plots her party’s next moves, Trump is expected to take center stage with a forceful address promoting his “Make America Great Again” agenda. And judging by his latest statements, he won’t be pulling any punches.
