The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction has issued an alert for fugitive Nikia Monique Thompson, the niece of New York Attorney General Letitia James’s family.

Thompson, listed as an “Absconder” (offender number 0898340) on the department’s official website, is wanted for probation violations.

Authorities have urged anyone with information on her whereabouts to call their tip line at 1-888-646-0024.

Questions have surfaced about whether Thompson is hiding at a property tied to Attorney General James in Norfolk, Virginia.

James co-signed for a mortgage on the residence in August 2023 alongside her niece, Shamice Thompson-Hairston.

That property, located at 604 Sterling Street, has been flagged in federal inquiries over potential mortgage fraud.

As part of the mortgage transaction, James executed a notarized Power of Attorney that included a sworn statement declaring, “I hereby declare that I intend to occupy this property as my principal residence.”

The declaration was instrumental in securing favorable mortgage rates normally reserved for primary residences.

Critics say this could expose James to allegations of falsifying documents if the property was never actually her residence.

In an April 14, 2025, letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte cited James’s sworn statement as a key concern in the ongoing probe.

Pulte also raised James’s past financial dealings, including a 2011 HAMP loan previously reported on, as part of a broader referral to the Department of Justice.

On May 21, 2025, while addressing the Association for a Better New York, James defended her actions and denied wrongdoing in the Virginia mortgage transaction.

“In reality, the power of attorney was never used to determine my eligibility for a mortgage for my niece for a home in the state of Virginia,” James said.

“My niece has children, and because I’m a good aunt, I wanted her to have a home.”

However, critics noted that James’s defense was misleading. While her statement implied she acted on behalf of minors, records indicate that her niece’s children are adults with criminal backgrounds.

Thompson herself has an extensive criminal record in Virginia and North Carolina spanning two decades.

Court records show Thompson has multiple convictions including contributing to the delinquency of a minor, child abuse, possession of burglary tools, third-degree larceny, assault and battery, trespassing, shoplifting, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, and driving with a suspended license.

She has also faced charges for malicious conduct while incarcerated.

Her repeated arrests and convictions raise questions about James’s decision to provide support to her niece and, according to allegations, potentially shelter Thompson while she is wanted as a fugitive.

Because Thompson’s case involves interstate movement, legal experts note that anyone found to be harboring her could face federal harboring charges carrying penalties of up to five years in prison.

The potential personal connection between James and Thompson is further highlighted by Thompson’s own LinkedIn page, where she wrote: “Been working with Ms James for years from council member to Public advocate to Attorney General.”

As North Carolina authorities continue their search, scrutiny is growing over James’s mortgage dealings and possible involvement in aiding a fugitive.

Federal officials are reviewing the matter as part of a broader inquiry into financial misconduct allegations tied to James’s Virginia property.

The Department of Adult Correction has reiterated its appeal for public assistance in locating Thompson.
