Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) has called for the United States to leave NATO following a decision by Norwegian fuel company Haltbakk Bunkers to stop refueling U.S. military ships.

March 21, 2022; Washington, DC, USA; Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, participates in the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for Supreme Court Associate Justice nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson on March 21, 2022 in Washington. Judge Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden to replace Associate Justice Stephen Breyer, who plans to retire at the end of the term. If confirmed, Judge Jackson will be the first Black woman to sit on the United States Supreme Court. Mandatory Credit: Jack Gruber-USA TODAY

“Europe doesn’t love us,” Lee wrote in a post on X. “Let’s leave NATO.”

Elon Musk Called This Financial News ‘Terrifying’

Lee’s comments were in response to reports that Haltbakk Bunkers had stopped refueling U.S. Navy vessels and was encouraging other European countries to take similar action.

I should clarify the decision not to refuel was made by a private marine fuel provider in Norway, and that the Norway Minister of Defence appeared to have later stepped in and overrode the fuel boycott. In a statement, Haltbakk Bunkers confirmed that it would no longer supply fuel to American military ships in Norway or those docking in Norwegian ports.

The company stated that the decision was based on the U.S. government’s approach to the war in Ukraine.

“The United States is excluded based on their behaviour towards the Ukrainians,” the company said, according to the Daily Mail.

Ladies and gentlemen.

I present to you the Norwegian army.

The move comes in the wake of a contentious Oval Office meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Zelensky was asked to leave the White House after the meeting took a confrontational turn.

Haltbakk Bunkers further displayed its stance with a statement that read, “No Fuel to Americans,” while also calling on other nations to follow its lead, according to reports.

Following the meeting between Trump and Zelensky, several European leaders took to X to express their continued support for Ukraine.

As Breitbart News previously reported, Zelensky used the meeting to criticize European governments and prior U.S. administrations for their handling of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions, specifically regarding the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

During the discussion, Vance urged for diplomacy as a solution, stating that it was “the path to peace, the path to prosperity.”

Zelensky responded by questioning the nature of the diplomacy Vance was referring to.

“With respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media,” Vance told Zelensky.

“Right now you guys are going around and forcing conscripts to the front lines because you have manpower problems. You should be thanking the president for trying to bring an end to this conflict.”

President Trump also pushed back when Zelensky implied that Ukraine had been left without support in its war against Russia.

“You haven’t been alone,” Trump told Zelensky. “We gave you, through [our] stupid president, $350 billion. We gave you military equipment … If you didn’t have our military equipment, this war would’ve been over in two weeks.”

Here is the full 50-minute conversation between President Trump and President Zelensky.

There are a lot of politicians claiming Zelensky was “ambushed.”

The White House later confirmed that Zelensky had refused to sign a minerals agreement, which was a key part of the discussions.

Background on what just went down, per White House official:

After the contentious Oval Office meeting that played out in front of reporters, Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians went into a separate room (standard) while Trump huddled with his advisors.

At that point, Trump decided…

Trump subsequently stated that Zelensky was “not ready for Peace if America is involved” and that he would not be invited back until he was prepared to negotiate an end to the conflict.

Zelensky posted on X early Saturday morning stating that he was now “ready to sign the minerals agreement.”

We are ready to sign the minerals agreement, and it will be the first step toward security guarantees. But it’s not enough, and we need more than just that. A ceasefire without security guarantees is dangerous for Ukraine. We’ve been fighting for 3 years, and Ukrainian people…

— Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) March 1, 2025

Lee’s call for the U.S. to exit NATO adds to ongoing debates about the country’s role in global alliances and military commitments.

The reaction from European officials and NATO leadership to his statement remains to be seen.
