A heated exchange erupted on Fox News’ The Five Thursday as Democrat strategist and co-host Jessica Tarlov found herself at odds with the rest of the panel during a segment on President Donald Trump’s newly announced tariff policy.
The debate came in response to Trump’s April 2 announcement of reciprocal tariffs on multiple countries, a move that triggered immediate reactions on Wall Street and strong support from Republican lawmakers.
Trump also paused most of the tariffs for 90 days, with China as the exception.

While Republican hosts on the panel praised Trump’s approach to restoring domestic industry and countering unfair foreign trade practices, Tarlov argued that Democrats had also made gains in manufacturing and said her co-hosts were viewing the issue from a limited perspective.
“You guys are talking about this from a very privileged seat,” Tarlov said.
Judge Jeanine Pirro rejected that claim, responding, “Bringing jobs to middle America is not privileged.”
Tarlov pointed to Microsoft’s recent announcement that it would not be opening a planned data center in Ohio, implying that Trump’s tariff strategy could be influencing corporate investment decisions.

“This is what it’s doing,” Tarlov said.
“Microsoft announces they’re not opening up a new data center in Ohio because of this.”
Fox News host Jesse Watters dismissed the argument, saying that the decision had “nothing to do” with the tariffs announced by Trump.
Tarlov pushed back again, shifting to the legislative record under Joe Biden.
“Walmart saying, ‘We can’t do our economic forecasting.’ You said, ‘What do Democrats know about bringing back these jobs?’ Talk about the CHIPS and Science Act,” she said.
“Talk about how many manufacturing jobs came back under Joe Biden.”
Watters responded by asking for specific examples.
“Wait, wait, wait. What chips plant was built under Joe Biden? What chips plant, Jessica?” he asked.
Joe Biden has signed several large-scale economic packages — including the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act — allocating billions in subsidies intended to bolster domestic manufacturing.
However, despite the spending, the U.S. did not see a net increase in manufacturing jobs in March 2024. Federal data shows a net total of zero manufacturing jobs created that month.
Fox’s Greg Gutfeld joked in response, “I think it was ice chips.”
Tarlov continued to defend Biden’s trade policies.
“Joe Biden increased Trump’s China tariffs by threefold,” she said. “Democrats can’t have a new — You have to be precise about what you’re doing! This is not precise on any level.”
Pirro chimed in again, saying, “Everyone can agree that China needs to be tariffed because they cheat, they steal.”
Tarlov replied, “Let them eat cake. Marie Antoinette over here.”
Confused, Pirro asked, “Who? The Chinese? Who is Marie Antoinette?”
Tarlov attempted to explain that she was referring to dismissive attitudes from those downplaying the impact of economic policies on everyday Americans.
“People who say, ‘Don’t look at your 401k.’ People who say ‘I’m—’” she began before being interrupted as the panel began speaking over each other.
The segment ended in a back-and-forth that highlighted the stark divide between the co-hosts over the effectiveness of tariff policy, economic messaging, and the contrasting records of Presidents Trump and Biden on manufacturing.
