Elon Musk’s Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE) has sparked a political firestorm this week after his team turned its attention to USAID, uncovering what has been described as significant waste and mismanagement.
The findings have drawn strong reactions from Democratic leaders, leading to public backlash and even criticism from within their own party.
Democrats have aggressively pushed back against the scrutiny on USAID, but their response has not been well received.

Even former Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) publicly criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for how the party was handling the situation.
Adding to the blow, a CNN panel openly mocked the Democratic reaction, highlighting what they saw as an ineffective and disorganized protest against Musk and his efforts to expose government waste.

Amid the growing controversy, Mike Benz, the Director of the Foundation for Freedom Online and a former State Department official, made a connection between USAID and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).
Benz pointed out that Cheney had worked for USAID earlier in her career, suggesting that her political trajectory was influenced by the agency.
“She was spawned out of USAID,” Benz stated, drawing attention to her past ties to the agency now under scrutiny.
Elon Musk responded simply with “Interesting.”

Cheney quickly responded to Musk, but her remarks drew confusion and criticism.
In a bizarre tweet, Cheney seemed to reference the Cold War and the Soviet Union, despite neither being mentioned in the original discussion.
Damn right, @Elon. I’m proud of what America did to win the Cold War, defeat Soviet communism, and defend democracy. Our nation stood for freedom. You may be unfamiliar with that part of our history since you weren’t yet an American citizen. https://t.co/lYpGhmVJnT

Adding to the misstep, Cheney failed to correctly tag Musk’s X account, leading to mockery from users on the platform.

Several users on X also pointed out the pardon she received from Joe Biden, but Cheney did not respond to inquiries about the matter.
In her response, Cheney suggested that Musk might be “unfamiliar” with America’s history of standing for freedom because he was not yet a U.S. citizen during key historical moments.
Her comments drew strong reactions, with Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) criticizing her statement, saying, “Not cool.”

Many users on X also called out Cheney for attacking an immigrant who became a U.S. citizen, viewing her remarks as dismissive and condescending.
Musk has faced ongoing attacks and political pressure since acquiring Twitter, now rebranded as X.
His willingness to take on government inefficiency and publicly support Donald Trump has made him a frequent target of political opponents.
Despite the criticism, Musk remains committed to the DOGE initiative, which aims to cut government waste and improve efficiency.
In response to Cheney’s reaction, Musk responded with “no kidding” to Mike Benz’s summation of “Damn right I was spawned out of USAID.”

The growing controversy surrounding USAID, DOGE, and Musk’s investigation continues to gain traction, with more scrutiny expected on the agency’s spending and its connections to political figures.
