Grammy-winning artist Lizzo referenced actress Sydney Sweeney in her latest song, which appears to weigh in on the recent controversy surrounding American Eagle’s fall denim campaign, as reported by The new York Post.

In a teaser clip posted Wednesday to her 11.6 million Instagram followers, Lizzo previewed a track titled “I’m Goin’ In Till October” and included a reference to the Euphoria star, whose American Eagle ad sparked backlash across social media platforms.

Lizzo, 37, wore denim shorts in the video and was seen twerking next to a red Porsche while rapping the line:

“Fat a** pretty face with the t**ties / B**ch, I got good jeans like I’m Sydney.”

The lyric is a direct nod to the viral American Eagle campaign starring Sweeney, 27, which ignited controversy for its use of the phrase “great jeans,” a play on words that critics claimed resembled coded political messaging.

Some on social media accused the ad of promoting white nationalist overtones, calling the wordplay “Nazi propaganda.”

The Anyone But You actress has not commented publicly on the backlash. American Eagle issued a statement defending the campaign and its messaging.

Beverly Hills, CA USA – March 14, 2024: Sydney Sweeney attends the 35th Annual GLAAD Awards.

“This campaign is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her narrative. We will continue to honor the unique ways everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence,” the company stated. “Great jeans flatter everyone.”

Despite the uproar, American Eagle doubled down on its original creative direction and emphasized the campaign was about fashion and body positivity, not politics or ideology.

The controversy also caught the attention of President Donald Trump, who responded to the ad after learning that Sweeney is a registered Republican.

“Go get ‘em Sydney … The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.”

Sweeney’s jeans ad first launched earlier this month as part of American Eagle’s fall fashion rollout. It prominently featured Sweeney wearing denim and smiling alongside text that reads “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”

While the retailer insisted the campaign was focused solely on celebrating personal style and individuality, it quickly became a cultural flashpoint online.

The renewed attention from Lizzo’s lyric appears to be the latest in a growing list of celebrity responses to the ad campaign and the surrounding discourse. Lizzo has not further commented on the reference beyond her social media teaser.
