Long Island Fire Chief Removed After Video Shows Him Yelling at Crying 10-Year-Old [WATCH]

A Long Island fire chief has been stripped of his duties following the release of a viral video that shows him shouting profanities at a 10-year-old girl during an emergency call in West Babylon, New York, as reported by The New York Post.

Peter Alt, a 22-year veteran of the North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company, was recorded telling the child to “shut the f**k up” as she cried and resisted entering an ambulance.

The girl’s family says she was emotionally distraught after her mother took away her phone. The child’s grandmother told NBC New York that the situation escalated to the point where the family called for help.

In the footage, which has received more than 4.5 million views on TikTok, the girl is heard crying, “I don’t want to go! I want to go home!” Alt replies, “Shut your mouth!” as responders load her into the ambulance and close the doors.

“He was supposed to protect her and help her, not verbally abuse her,” the girl’s mother told Newsday. She asked not to be identified. “He failed her. At no point should a child or human be spoken to like that ever.”

The North Babylon Fire Company announced on August 5 that Alt had been relieved of duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation. “The Fire Company does not condone this behavior and deems it unacceptable,” the company’s executive board said in a statement.

The family said they have called first responders in the past during similar incidents and had always received respectful and understanding treatment.

The girl, a fifth-grader, has since withdrawn from normal activities and “didn’t want to go to school,” her grandmother told Newsday. “She has anxiety. She will need therapy.”

The grandmother also questioned whether race may have influenced the chief’s behavior, although no racial language was used in the video.

Suffolk County Police officers were also present at the scene during the incident. The department confirmed that officers at the scene reported the chief’s conduct to a supervisor and that internal affairs notified the Town of Babylon.

No further disciplinary actions have been announced.

Alt’s role as a conductor with the Long Island Rail Road is also under review. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed that Alt has been “withheld from duty pending full review of the situation.”

The MTA has not released a formal statement beyond confirming the personnel status.
