Luigi Mangione’s Family Breaks Silence on CEO Murder Charge, He Spiraled After ‘Traumatic’ Surgery [WATCH]

The arrest of Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has left his family reeling.

As reported by The New York Post, Mangione, described as a high-achieving valedictorian with a promising future, allegedly spiraled into isolation and instability following a harrowing back surgery that changed the trajectory of his life.

In a statement shared by Republican Baltimore County Delegate Nino Mangione, the family expressed their shock and heartbreak.

“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news,” they said.

Mangione, apprehended at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania after a five-day manhunt, was reportedly identified by an employee who recognized him from police photos.

When approached by local authorities, Mangione allegedly began shaking and presented a fake New Jersey ID.

Police discovered a ghost gun with a silencer and a handwritten manifesto in his possession. The document, described as a rambling justification for his alleged actions, chillingly stated, “I do apologize for any strife of traumas, but it had to be done.”

Raised in Towson, Maryland, Mangione hails from a wealthy real estate family that owns multiple country clubs, a radio station, and other high-profile properties.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and was once regarded as a brilliant and driven individual. However, friends and family observed a stark change in his behavior following his back surgery, which included the insertion of massive screws into his spine.

RJ Martin, a former roommate in Hawaii, recalled Mangione sharing X-rays of his spine post-surgery.

“It looked heinous, with just giant screws going into his spine,” Martin said, noting that even a simple surfing lesson left Mangione bedridden for a week.

Jack Mac of Barstool Sports echoed similar sentiments, stating on X that Mangione’s back surgery seemed to mark the beginning of his descent into mental instability.

Mangione’s mother reported him missing last month, desperately seeking help from his friends and peers to locate him.

Law enforcement sources revealed that in the weeks leading up to the alleged murder, Mangione became estranged from those closest to him.

The victim, Brian Thompson, was gunned down while walking alone to a Hilton hotel in Manhattan.

The 50-year-old CEO was in town for an investor conference hosted by UnitedHealthcare’s parent company. Hours after his initial arraignment in Pennsylvania on weapons and forgery charges, Mangione was formally charged with murder in New York.
