Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said she has formally referred individuals to the Department of Justice over allegations that they knowingly ignored fraud, shut down investigations, and dismissed clear warning signs, describing the situation as corruption that cuts across political lines.
Luna said the Department of Justice has already acknowledged receipt of the referrals and that the allegations are supported by witness testimony and additional evidence.
“Yes, I actually have already made those referrals. The DOJ did confirm receipt of them,” Luna said.
“We actually know, according to witness testimony, and then another number of other pieces of evidence brought forward that both individuals knew about the fraud, that they either shut down investigations or intentionally ignored the red flags that were coming out.”
Luna said the evidence points to a broader pattern of misconduct rather than isolated failures, adding that what has surfaced so far may only represent the beginning of a larger investigation.
“And then also, too, there’s also allegedly a recording with Attorney General Ellison that’s actually stating that he would basically ignore recommendations of HHS if you could get support from the Somali community,” Luna said.
“And so what we know right now is both of these individuals, I don’t think that they are the top dogs, but I do think that this is the tip of the iceberg.”

Luna said she believes the issue extends beyond individual actors and reflects a more widespread problem involving elected officials who failed to act despite being aware of potential wrongdoing.
“And again, the White House just announcing their task force to go after this,” she said.
“I mean, I do think that this is widespread.”
Luna specifically referenced Minnesota, saying that state leadership allowed the alleged misconduct to continue despite having authority and responsibility to address it.
“But also I want to point out the fact that when you have elected officials, specifically, for example, in Minnesota, with the governor and the attorney general, that are knowingly ignoring this, this is happening right underneath their noses,” Luna said.
She said individuals who attempted to raise concerns were allegedly punished rather than supported.
“And they’re telling people, or they are firing people that are speaking out about it, it’s completely wrong, and this is corruption,” she said.
Luna emphasized that her response would be the same regardless of party affiliation, stating that accountability should not depend on politics.
“I don’t care if this was just a Democrat. I don’t care if it was a Republican, I would have the same response,” she said.
Luna said she expects the Department of Justice to pursue the matter fully and said she anticipates criminal charges based on the evidence that has already emerged.
“And I do look forward to what the investigation yields by the Department of Justice,” Luna said.
“And then I also look forward to the Department of Justice bringing criminal charges, because I think, as you’re seeing now, Maria, they definitely exist.”
