Seventeen years after the high-profile disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal, her family has shared a rare glimpse of progress and pride.
As The Daily Mail reported, Madeleine’s younger brother, Sean McCann, is gaining national attention as a rising swimming talent, with projections placing him on track to compete for Team Great Britain at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Sean, now 19, was just two years old when Madeleine vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007. Despite the shadow cast by his sister’s disappearance, Sean has focused his energy on competitive swimming.

He began training seriously at age eight and has since gone on to win county, regional, and national titles.
In a statement written for a local website after receiving a training grant, Sean explained his early start in the sport.
“At the age of ten, I was selected to swim at the City of Leicester, and I have since gone on to win multiple county titles, as well as becoming regional and national champion in my age group,” he wrote.
He also detailed his strict routine, which includes early morning training sessions starting at 4 a.m. and over 20 hours per week in the gym.

Now a university student studying chemical engineering, Sean has already represented Scotland at an international competition in Spain, where he earned two medals. He is also anticipated to compete for Scotland in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
His twin sister, Amelie, is currently in her second year at a university in northern England, where she remains active in athletics and student life.
According to their great-uncle, Brian Kennedy, both Sean and Amelie have managed to create their own paths despite growing up in the public eye. “Kate and Gerry are pleased with their achievements, and the fact that they are making their own way in life,” Kennedy said.
Sean and Amelie were asleep in the same room as their older sister the night she was abducted. Madeleine was three years old at the time.
