Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, once viewed as a thorn in Donald Trump’s side, appears to be taking a more collaborative approach toward the former president’s potential return to the White House.
Speaking at a New York conference on Wednesday, Bezos praised Trump’s energy around cutting regulations and even offered to support efforts to roll back what he described as an overregulated system, as reported by The Daily Mail.
“I’m actually very optimistic this time around,” Bezos remarked. “He seems to have a lot of energy around reducing regulation. If I can help do that, I’m going to help him.” The billionaire doubled down, noting, “We do have too many regulations in this country.”

This tone marks a stark shift from Bezos’s history with Trump, which included the former president railing against the so-called “Amazon Washington Post” for alleged anti-Trump bias.
Trump had accused Bezos of leveraging the Post to wield political influence, often accusing the paper of avoiding taxes and pursuing an agenda against his administration. In response, Bezos maintained that he never interfered with the Post’s journalism.
Beyond regulatory discussions, Bezos addressed the controversy surrounding his decision to bar the Washington Post from endorsing presidential candidates.

His October announcement drew sharp criticism, with readers canceling subscriptions en masse and longtime journalists expressing outrage. Despite the backlash, Bezos stood firm, calling the move a “principled decision.”
“Presidential endorsements do nothing to tip the scales of an election,” Bezos explained. “No undecided voters in Pennsylvania are going to say, ‘I’m going with Newspaper A’s endorsement.’ None.”
He also acknowledged that the decision carried public relations risks but added, “You can’t do the wrong thing because you are worried about bad PR.”
Now, Bezos is working to rebuild the paper’s readership, stating, “We saved The Washington Post once. This will be the second time.”

In a moment of reflection, Bezos expressed hope that Trump’s view of the press has evolved. He said he would try to talk him “out of the idea” that the press is the enemy. “You’ve probably grown in the last eight years. He has, too.”
However, tensions between Bezos and Trump are hard to ignore. During Trump’s presidency, Amazon sued the government over allegations that political bias influenced the Pentagon’s decision to deny a $10 billion cloud-computing contract.
While the Biden administration later pursued a more neutral contract structure, the feud highlighted Trump’s grievances with Bezos.
Bezos’s optimism for regulatory reform and his efforts to rehabilitate the Washington Post signal a strategic pivot. Whether this approach fosters cooperation with Trump or reignites old battles remains to be seen.
