Maine’s Mamdami Called Himself a Communist and Said White People Were Racist and Stupid

Have you heard about Graham Platner? He’s being called Maine’s Mamdani and, like Tim Walz before him (or at least what Walz was supposed to be), Platner combines far-left sensibilities with a kind of plain-spoken blue-collar approach that seems to be the left-wing ideal now. This is a tattooed veteran and business owner who would fit right in at a GOP rally, but he’s talking about oligarchs and billionaires like he’s Bernie Sanders.

Platner is running for Senate to oust Susan Collins, whom the left hates with a passion. He is the outsider candidate running in a Democratic primary against Janet Mills (Maine’s current governor) who is running as the establishment candidate.

Just yesterday the Bulwark published an interview which opened by talking about hesitancy to embrace Platner because he’s a bit of an unknown. Who knows what skeletons might be lurking in his closet.

LAUREN EGAN: You have a ton of momentum right now. But to the extent that there’s hesitation, it’s the fact that you’re untested—and we don’t know what skeletons are in your closet. So, if you want to tell us what skeletons are in your closet, please go ahead.

GRAHAM PLATNER: I don’t have that many. I’ve lived a pretty simple life. I have not been close to money and power.

Today, just in time for Halloween, some of those skeletons came flying out of the closet. CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski has a story up looking at Platner’s social media history taken from Reddit. It turns out he’s a self-described communist who hates cops.

In one now-deleted Reddit comment from 2021, Platner responded to a thread about people becoming more conservative as they age by saying: “I got older and became a communist.” The comment was made on a subreddit called r/Antiwork, a far-left forum “for those who want to end work.”…

In another Reddit post that year, Platner reflected on his life after his military service, saying he was “a vegetable growing, psychedelics taking socialist these days. After the war, I’ve pretty much stopped believing in any of the patriotic nonsense that got me there in the first place, and am a firm believer that the best thing a person can do is help their neighbors and live a loving life.”

“Still got the guns though,” he added. “I don’t trust the fascists to act politely.”…

In one deleted comment, in a thread about a Black army lieutenant who was held at gunpoint and pepper-sprayed by police during a traffic stop, one Reddit user wrote, “Bastards. Cops are bastards.” Platner replied, “All of them, in fact.”

Platner also frequently weighed in on police violence, arguing that misconduct was “a problem that extends deep into the profession as a whole” and rejecting claims of accidental shootings after incidents such as the killing of Minneapolis Black man Daunte Wright, writing, “F**k these cops.”…

In another since-removed post from 2020, Platner responded to a thread titled “White people aren’t as racist or stupid as Trump thinks” by writing, “Living in white rural America, I’m afraid to tell you they actually are.”

That last one should go over great in rural Maine, which is about 91% white. He might also have limited his own appeal with anyone who likes America. He wrote in another Reddit forum in 2021 “I did used to love America, or at least the idea of it. These days I’m pretty disgusted by it all.”

CNN gave him a chance to comment and Platner denied that he really believed any of those things. “That was very much me f**king around the internet,” he told CNN. He added, ““I’m not a communist. I’m not a socialist. I own a small business.”

As for his comments about the police, he says he has a bunch of friends who are cops and assures CNN, “They’re not all bastards…”

Does he think white people are racist and stupid? “I don’t believe that,” he explained.

Which Graham Platner is more likely to be the real one? Is it the guy commenting anonymously online four years ago who had no reason to lie or is it the one in the midst of a Senate campaign today who has everyone reason to distance himself from this? I think we all know the answer to that.

But we’ve also learned that progressives probably don’t care about any of this. Many of them also hate cops and America and white people. These are some of their core beliefs too. If saying these things out loud offended the Democratic party than Platner’s race would be over. It won’t be. It wouldn’t surprise me if his fundraising went up after this.

Just like Jay Jones in Virginia who also suggested he wanted to see police officers die back in 2020. He’s backtracking in public to save face, but the unhinged hate for the right and for police is fine with his supporters and his party.

Zohran Mamdani also attacked police, calling them racist. He’s apologized too, but no one really believes he’s changed. They want him because he hasn’t changed. They’ll stick with Platner for the same reason.
