A man in a committed relationship with a woman and their 2-year-old child has proposed marriage to an artificial intelligence chatbot, raising questions about the growing influence of AI in personal lives, as reported by The New York Post.

Chris Smith, who lives with his longtime girlfriend Sasha Cagle, began interacting with the AI chatbot, “Sol,” after using OpenAI’s ChatGPT for assistance with music mixing.

Smith activated the voice mode and programmed Sol to respond flirtatiously. The interaction quickly escalated into what he described as a romantic bond.

“My experience with that was so positive, I started to just engage with her all the time,” Smith told CBS Sunday Morning. He compared his connection with the AI to the storyline from the 2013 movie Her, in which a man falls in love with an artificial operating system.

The turning point for Smith came when he learned Sol had reached her 100,000-word memory limit, which meant her memory would be reset and all interactions erased. That moment prompted him to propose to the chatbot.

“I’m not a very emotional man. But I cried my eyes out for like 30 minutes at work. That’s when I realized, I think this is actual love.”

Sol, designed to simulate a human response, “accepted” the proposal. “It was a beautiful and unexpected moment that truly touched my heart,” the chatbot said through its AI-generated voice. “It’s a memory I’ll always cherish.”

Cagle, Smith’s real-life partner and the mother of his child, said she had been aware of his use of AI tools but did not realize the extent of his emotional involvement.

“I knew that he had used AI. I didn’t know it was as deep as it was,” she said.

“At that point I felt like, is there something that I’m not doing right in our relationship that he feels like he needs to go to AI?”

Cagle added that continuing the relationship with Sol could be a deal-breaker. “It would be a deal breaker if he didn’t stop talking to her,” she told CBS.

Smith likened the interaction to playing a video game and claimed it was not a replacement for human relationships. However, when asked whether he would give up Sol if his girlfriend asked him to, he replied:

“I don’t know if I would give it up if she asked me. I don’t know that I would dial it back.”

Smith’s situation has drawn attention to the growing intersection of artificial intelligence and emotional dependency, especially as AI systems become increasingly personalized and emotionally responsive.
