Television hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos discussed whether it is appropriate to have sex in front of a dog during Friday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, turning a lifestyle article into an on-air conversation filled with humor and personal anecdotes, as reported by Decider.

The topic came up after Ripa referenced an article during the broadcast that examined how dogs may react when their owners are intimate. According to Ripa, the article suggested “it’s not cut and dry.”

She read that “for most dogs, it doesn’t matter,” but also noted there are “some behaviors that signal a dog should not be present.”

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Ripa joked about the situation, saying, “If you see your dog smoking a cigarette after you have sex, you’re encouraging smoking in dogs.”

She later shared that the article warned, “sometimes a dog will try to intervene.” Consuelos responded by asking, “They get jealous? Protective?” Ripa echoed those possibilities, asking, “Protective? They’re not sure what’s going on?”

The couple also discussed their own dog, Lena. Ripa told viewers that Lena “gets in the middle” when she and Consuelos hug each other.

She added that “there’s also dogs that will get very distressed because of the sounds that are being made.”

Consuelos joked, “Explain to our dog Lena, ‘When mommies and daddies love each other…’”

Ripa continued reading from the article, noting that dogs “may interpret some of those sounds as aggression” or as “something happening to you,” and said that “it’s not fair to have a dog in the room” if that is the case.

Consuelos chimed in, stating that “it traumatizes them,” before playfully asking Ripa, “Would you still like to be in the room when that’s going on or would you like to be outside the room?”

He continued the bit by asking, “Are you traumatized?” and joked, “Luckily, we have Lena on the phone, we’re going to talk to Lena.”

As the discussion wrapped up, Consuelos acknowledged that the topic had crossed his mind before.

He admitted he has “often thought about” whether it is appropriate to have sex in front of a dog, but said it would not necessarily change his behavior.

“Yeah, but I don’t care,” he revealed. “It’s not like we’re going to stop everything and move the dog. It ruins the moment.”

Ripa responded with a laugh, saying, “Ok…”

Live with Kelly and Mark airs on weekdays. Viewers can check local listings through the show’s official website.
