Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans says the upcoming film “Scary Movie 6” will push back against what he describes as modern “cancel culture,” as the long-running comedy franchise prepares to return to theaters, as reported by Fox News.

Wayans recently released the trailer for the new installment and discussed the project in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Monday.

The actor said the goal of the film is to revive the type of comedy that made the original “Scary Movie” films successful.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“What we’re trying to do is bring back laughter,” Wayans told the outlet. “This is about bringing back comedy the way it used to be. And I think the only way to do it is you have to cancel the cancel culture.”

“Scary Movie 6,” directed by Michael Tiddes, is scheduled to be released on June 5.

Marlon Wayans about Scary Movie 6

“It’s how we always do it. We just want to make everybody laugh, and we don’t care if you’re sensitive. Even sensitive people need to laugh at themselves.

Just know that we’re not just laughing at you, you get the chance to laugh at others.… pic.twitter.com/49kWV9ndel

The film stars Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and Wayans, continuing the franchise that first debuted in 2000 and became known for parodying popular horror films and cultural trends.

According to promotional materials and the newly released trailer, the latest installment follows two friends navigating encounters with killers, supernatural creatures, and monsters while the story unfolds through a series of comedic scenes.

The trailer also includes jokes that reference contemporary cultural and political debates. In one scene featured in the preview, a killer attacks a character while riding a bus.

“Oh my God, he stabbed her!” one character says.

The victim responds, “I’m not her! My pronouns are they/them.”

Another character then reacts, “He stabbed them!”

Another moment in the trailer shows two of the franchise’s central characters meeting again after some time apart and hesitating about whether to hug.

“I’m a Republican now, so I’m supposed to be racist,” Cindy says in the scene.

Brenda responds, “Oh, girl, I think all White people are racist anyway. Come here!”

Wayans said the film will continue the approach that earlier entries in the franchise used, taking aim at a wide range of cultural and political subjects.

“We’re gonna do what we always do. We’re gonna make fun of everybody because we’re equal opportunity offenders,” Wayans said.

He also described the style of humor used in the series as something that developed from his upbringing and family background.

“We have a recipe, we have a formula that you can’t mimic or copy. You could try, but it’s very specific. It’s how we grew up, and it’s how we see the world. It’s the household we were raised in with the sense of humor that we all were governed with, that we inherited from our mother.”

Wayans added that the film attempts to balance bold comedy with humor intended to allow audiences to laugh at themselves.

“We like to be fearless,” he said.

“Yet still do things with kid gloves to let people laugh at themselves.”

The “Scary Movie” franchise has historically relied on parody and satire, often referencing major horror films, pop culture events, and current social debates.

Earlier installments were known for spoofing films such as “Scream,” “The Ring,” and other popular horror titles while mixing in commentary on current cultural topics.

The upcoming release marks the return of several recognizable faces from the earlier films, including Faris and Hall, who played central characters in previous installments.

With the June 5 release date approaching, the trailer has generated attention online for its approach to contemporary issues, including political divisions and debates over gender identity.

Wayans indicated that the new film will continue the franchise’s established formula of parody while targeting a wide range of subjects.
