Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) conducted a poll on the social media platform X on Wednesday morning, asking users whether Mike Johnson, the current Speaker of the House, should be reelected to serve another term as Speaker on January 3, 2025.

The results were overwhelming, with more than 93% of respondents voting for “someone else” to lead the House.

The poll comes in the wake of widespread dissatisfaction among Republicans following Johnson’s handling of a government funding bill.

Late Friday, Johnson reportedly struck a backroom deal with Democrats, bypassing a Trump-supported strategy for addressing government funding.

Earlier that day, Republican leaders had proposed a plan involving three separate funding bills after a Trump-backed proposal was rejected by Democrats and some Republicans.

This alternative strategy was approved, according to Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL). However, Johnson ultimately abandoned the plan and moved forward with an “all-in-one” bill heavily supported by Democrats.

The funding bill passed with significant Democrat backing, with 196 Democrats and 170 Republicans voting in favor.

More Democrats supported the measure than Republicans, a detail that has intensified criticism of Johnson’s leadership.

Rep. Mills, who voted against the measure, told The Gateway Pundit that Johnson’s decision to side with Democrats was a betrayal of both the GOP and former President Donald Trump.

Adding to the backlash, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) stated that Democrats would not come to Johnson’s aid in the future, further isolating the Speaker.

This comes after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion earlier this year to vacate Johnson’s position as Speaker.

The motion was tabled with overwhelming bipartisan support, with 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats voting to keep Johnson in his role.

The dissatisfaction with Johnson’s leadership is not limited to Greene. Reps. Massie and Paul Gosar (R-AZ) co-sponsored Greene’s earlier motion to vacate the speakership, signaling deeper divisions within the Republican Party.

Massie’s poll, which garnered over 166,000 responses, reflects growing discontent among Republican voters and highlights the challenges Johnson faces in maintaining party unity.

The results also suggest significant pressure for GOP lawmakers to reconsider their leadership decisions ahead of the January 2025 vote for Speaker.

Meanwhile, former President Trump is reportedly reevaluating his support for Johnson after the Speaker’s handling of the government funding bill.

Trump had issued specific demands regarding the funding measures, which were not followed through under Johnson’s leadership.

As the January vote for House Speaker approaches, the GOP faces increasing pressure to align its priorities and respond to the concerns of its voter base.
