A violent attack inside a Brooklyn home left four young girls seriously injured Sunday morning after a man allegedly slashed them with a meat cleaver before being shot by police officers who responded to the scene.
According to the NYPD, officers arrived at a residence on 84th Street in Dyker Heights around 10:15 a.m. following a 911 call made by an 11-year-old girl who had locked herself in a room to escape the attacker.
She told the dispatcher that her uncle had stabbed her and her siblings.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch held a press briefing at the scene, where she described how officers forced their way into the apartment after hearing screams coming from inside.
“At that point [the cops] heard screams coming from behind the door to their left and immediately began forcing their way into the apartment, kicking down the door,” Tisch said.
Inside, officers encountered a man holding a meat cleaver covered in blood. Blood was also visible on the floor of the home, Tisch said.
Officers gave multiple commands for the man to drop the weapon, but he refused and advanced toward them.

“Two officers discharged their firearms, firing seven total rounds between them, striking the subject, ending the threat,” Tisch said.
The suspect was identified by police as 49-year-old Lun Chang Chen. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Authorities believe Chen lived in the home where the attack took place.
Four girls, aged 16, 13, 11, and 8, suffered serious slash and stab wounds in the attack.
All were taken to Maimonides Medical Center and are expected to survive.
“This could have ended very differently,” Tisch noted, crediting the rapid police response and actions of the 11-year-old who called 911.
Officials said a fifth child, a boy, had been in the apartment earlier but fled to get help when the attack began.
“Right now we know there were five children, four hurt,” Tisch said.
“This might be the father of some of them or the uncle. And, again, we’re going to work through that. And we believe the mother was out of the house.”
The motive for the attack is still under investigation.
Neighbor accounts described a chaotic and horrifying scene as emergency personnel arrived.
One resident, identified only as Maria, said she saw one of the girls emerge from the home covered in blood.
“I was watching through the window and the girl covered in blood came out,” she said.
“And then there was another girl. The two girls were just covered in blood. I was shaking. I’m still shaking now.”
“They just moved here. I lived here seven years and there are a lot of new people moving here,” she added.
Disturbing photos obtained by The New York Post showed one of the injured girls outside the building drenched in blood.
Another image showed the suspect being wheeled out on a stretcher.
“They brought out a guy on a stretcher, all bloody without a shirt,” said neighbor Humbert Huerta.
“I don’t know who it was, but they shot him twice. They took him out and put him in the ambulance. Probably 40 years old.”
New York State Assemblyman Lester Chang, who represents the area, said one of the victims may have been a babysitter.
Authorities have not confirmed the relationships between the suspect and the victims beyond what was reported by police at the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
