President Donald Trump’s promised “big, beautiful bill” is here. At well over 1000 pages, no one would contest its size. But not all Republicans are convinced of the so-called megabill’s beauty. Efforts to push the legislation past the finish line have been stymied — not by Democrats, but by discontents within a Republican-majority House of Representatives.
Now, Trump is staking out Capitol Hill to do what he does best: make a deal. There are several warring factions within the Republican Party he, along with House Republican leaders, will have to unite. It’s a tough task. He’ll have to remedy a melange of concerns, some of which contradict each other. And he’ll have to do it all before Speaker Mike Johnson’s Memorial Day deadline. If Trump can pull it off, he’ll do more than pass the bill — he’ll draft an ideological vision for the GOP for years to come.
