During an appearance on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, conservative journalist Megyn Kelly made waves in a pointed exchange with host Bill Maher on the topics of the U.S. border crisis and gender ideology.

The discussion saw Kelly challenge Maher’s views on the Biden administration’s handling of the southern border, as well as on issues surrounding gender reassignment for minors.

Kelly began by highlighting the impact of Biden’s reversal of several Trump-era policies aimed at curbing illegal immigration.

She noted that these policies, which included numerous executive orders, had successfully limited illegal entries into the U.S. “Since 2021, more than 10 million illegal aliens have entered the country,” Kelly stated, adding that Biden’s approach had, in her view, worsened the border crisis. Maher conceded that the administration had “f***ed up” the situation at the border but attempted to shift the conversation toward January 6 and former President Trump’s rhetoric. Kelly quickly dismissed the topic.

“I don’t care about that at all,” she responded when Maher pressed her on the subject. Kelly argued that Trump’s rhetoric was often overblown by media and pointed to a series of longstanding anti-Trump narratives in the press. She listed examples of what she referred to as “media-backed hoaxes,” citing previous GOP candidates who faced similar treatment.

“They’ve been saying that about Trump for years. They’ve been saying that about Republican candidates for years,” Kelly said. “Whether it’s the F word, the R word, the misogynist word. They tried to tell us Mitt Romney was a raging sexist because of binders full of women. They tried to tell us John McCain was a raging racist, notwithstanding the fact that he had adopted a daughter from Bangladesh.”

She continued, “They get to Trump, and we no longer are listening to them. Trump has incendiary rhetoric, there’s no question, but we have four years to judge him by, and the country was going pretty well when Trump was in there, unlike the four years we’ve had under these two.”

As the conversation evolved, Kelly turned to gender ideology and policies affecting minors.

She expressed her concern over gender reassignment procedures for children, an issue she described as “almost my single issue.”

Her remarks initially met with resistance from Maher’s left-leaning audience, but she proceeded to outline her position on the implications of gender ideology for young people.

“We are chopping off the healthy body parts of young children,” Kelly asserted, addressing the audience’s reaction by saying, “Oh, 100%.” She elaborated on the topic, explaining that children dealing with bullying, puberty, or trauma sometimes question their gender identity, often leading to affirmation-based counseling.

“Kids who are suffering from bullying, or who have been sexually assaulted or who are going through normal puberty and feel uncomfortable in their bodies will say to their parents, ‘I’m not sure, maybe I’m gender confused.’ They will send them into a psychiatrist or psychologist who are told by our organizations, the American Psychiatry Association, all the others that run their licensing, you must affirm,” Kelly stated.

She explained that affirmation is the current standard of care, often leading to the child being placed on puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones, treatments that can sterilize them and alter their life irreversibly.

According to Kelly, these medical interventions are conducted on minors who are too young to provide informed consent, leading to permanent changes that may affect their health and well-being long term. “We’re talking about 9, 10, 11-year-olds who cannot give informed consent,” she said. “Then they have body parts chopped off by a medical establishment and by parents who mean well but believe in these doctors and they shouldn’t.”

Maher expressed agreement on some points, nodding when Kelly affirmed the reality of these procedures. He acknowledged, “We are definitely doing that.”

Kelly’s appearance on Real Time sparked significant discussion online, with many observers noting her ability to engage both Maher and his typically left-leaning audience on contentious issues.
